Would I have to see a psychiatrist to be prescribed medicine to treat anxiety, or if I saw my regular internist for a checkup, would he be able to do the same?

You can be treated for anxiety, as far as being prescribed medications for it by your regular family doctor. You do not have to see a psychiatrist, unless of course your doctor referrs you to that department. Generally a doc can prescribe and treat many problems. Anxiety and depression is common for many docs to treat in several different departments.

for treating anxiety it also helps to learn how to relax and get massaged, hot tubs and jacuzzis are also very helpful, so is gentle exercise and long walks
IMO psychiatrists generally arent of much help and most GP docs will prescribe all the anxiety meds you need
