I have been off depo for exactly 2 years now to plan for last baby but I was on the shots from April 1995 until March 2003. The only side effects I had was headaches every once in a while. I think maybe it was around what would have been my ovulation time. Also, I only had about 4 periods in that whole time and I never spotted. Some women spot a lot though. The worse symptom I had was over 100 pound weight gain. Never had a weight problem until I was on the shots. Otherwise, it prevented pregnancy.

Hi,

The most common side effects from depo is change in your period and weight gain. I was on if for a year and half and just finished my 12th week on March 16th. My period pretty much stop 6 months into and I didn't gain any weight I actually lost 50 pds. I also lost a lot of hair because of it. I suggest if you are thinking of going on it, really do your research on it before. There's no way of reversing the shot after you have it, and it can stay long after the 12 weeks. Hope this info kinda helps.

Depo screwed me up really bad. I went on it after having a child and stayed on it for 2 years. I stopped to try to have another child. Two years later, my period still had not returned, so I saw a specialist and began Clomid, got pregnant 4 months later. For the first 5 years after Depo, those 4 months of Clomid were the ONLY months I had a period!!! Now, almost 9 years later, I get more periods, but only a handful a year, if that. I have also been diagnosed with PCOS (I am 30 years old)!!!! PCOS usually manifests itself at the onset of puberty. I never had an irregular period before using Depo. I believe my PCOS is the result of using Depo. Do a search........you will find many other women out there who are dealing with EXACTLY what I am dealing with.....PCOS after Depo.

I don't blame you a bit. I wish I had made my own decisions back then but I was 21 with a 2 year old and twins in NICU and felt like it was my family making decisions for me. Actually they wanted my tubes tied. Now I am almost 32 and I'm not on anything and trying for the last child and only then will I get my tubes tied. I gained over 100 pounds while on depo.

I started the shot about a month and a half ago and have had some side effects mostly only headaches and a little bit of weight gain but it is only water weight I think, however I now think that I might be pregnant. So look into and really talk to your doctor. I didn't even talk to mine I just went in and the nurse gave it to me. anyway, good luck

FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT TAKE DEPO!!! seriously though it is a horrible horrible drug. although some do not get many side effects i think way too many people do get serious side effects to the point where it shoudl be taken off the market. i've heard these crazy stories of women being on it for a year or more and still trying to have kids 5 years+ later....
also my friend was on it just recently after i told her not to in light ofmy experiences and found herself in the hospital with some kind of wierd toxic something or another (cant remember the name but i've seen a few testimonies online of women having it from depo before)
ok so for me... my gyno tells me "no there's no side effects aside from weight gain - which you wont have cuz ur so small - and some mild spotting here adn there" YA RIGHT! i had severe hair loss, and a year later my hair still hasn't been the same and falls out like crazy all the time, also i had really heavy periods (even tho you're not supposed to get them at all...) for like 3 weeks at a time, they'd go away for a day or two and then come back again for another week. it was horrible, plus i had really bad PMS. thank god no weight gain but sometimes i wonder if it even matters cuz the others were so terrible too in my opinion... i got off of it after the second shot and thankfully my period is somewhat normal now but dont even waste your time. this BC is a nightmare!
o ya and omg i cant believe i almost forgot this! the horrible horrible acne... good god i've never had acne like that in my life, and now my skin still is suffering from it. i had these large, painful, cystic zits all over my face and back.... it's bad enough ur depressed from the 24/7 pms and going bald lol but then u gotta have severe breakouts too? geez it was the worst mistake ofmy life....

Most of the time you are only going to hear the negative side of things when doing "research" on these boards. It is very important to keep in mind that for each person who uses some type of birth control there is an individual reaction for that particular method.

I myself did not mind using Depo, I was on it for about 4 years. I do not know when I got my first "true" period after cessation as I switched over to pills. For all I know I could be infertile anyway and have been going to the trouble of using BC for years, I've never tried to get pregnant.

For the first three months I had breakthrough bleeding. Then no more periods, but a couple (scary) incidents of BTB after that, nothing that compared with having periods though. I was slightly to moderately active, and gained about 7 lbs in the first year. I cut the "crap" out of my diet and exercised a little more regularly and lost 5 lbs.

Anytime progestins (or any other steroid) are being produced (or put into) in the body there will be an increase in appetite-an extra 100 calories (1 can of soda) a day is a gain of 10 lbs in a year, it's really easy to sneak the calories in and be surprised when you step on the scale.

I didn't get the really crazy hair loss, but my hair was really long at the time and came out in fistfulls anyway :) . I did have a bit of moodiness while I had a rather insufferable boyfriend, I was also in my teens/early 20s trying to take on the world-- it can pretty tough for young adults these days.

Oh, and ALL the horomonal BC I have ever used has kept me acne free, even through periods where I wore heavy make up.

I also had a lot of friends that used Depo and liked it as well. It can take 3-6 months for your body to adjust, so if you decide to try it, don't give up on it too soon (this goes for any BC). Regards.

Ok, I don't have any first hand experience with Depo but as someone who has had negative bcp side effects I do not understand why any woman would take bc that she couldn't stop taking if it effected her badly. You know? If you find out it effects you negatively... too bad. You're stuck with it till it decides to leave your system. I couldn't imagine.

Do lots of research before you make that commitment! Good luck :)

I just want to give you my opinion. My doctor whom has been a doctor for 20 plus years and is a gyno, has told me that depo will most likely cause weight gain and bad acne. Everyone she has prescribed it to, has had both of these side effects. It causes an increase in appetite, so that is what causes the weight gain. I gained about 25 pounds in 2 years and I did nothing different to gain it except eat more. It just happened. Because of other side effects creeping up, I have decided to come off of it (now off of it for over a month). I can tell you that I like being on it, because I had no periods. I did lose a lot of hair, it made me have bad headaches (although not sure if that really attributed to it), and made my immune system worse, acne bad with cystic marks, vaginal dryness, blurry vision, bloating. Sometimes you weigh the good with the bad. For me, I used it because of endometriosis and it helped the first year and a half, but the last year has been miserable and I decided to come off of it. It is hard now, because I am really moody and feel terrible. I haven't decided whether to use the Alesse my doctor prescibed me. I am just waiting to see how I feel. Right now I am really moody and angry all the time with bad headaches, I feel worse off of the depo, but I figure I am going thru w/d so I should give it a bit longer. Keep in touch and I can let you know how I am doing. Who knows.

I was rolling around doing some research on Depo, and the consequences far outweigh the benefits. I'd go to this link and take a read, just remember heroin & cocaine are good for a lotta things too :D

I went on the shot three months after the birth of my last child knowing that my husband and I probably didn't want anymore children.

I spotted for about three weeks and had no period at all after that, lost significant amounts of hair for the first three months, lost 5 lbs with each of my first two shots and I began to have cystic acne during the same time period every month.

After doing some internet surfing I came across all of the horror stories and got off of it after about two years. I switched to the pill and began having periods every month which were accompanied by monthly yeast infections and daily headaches. Upon my doctors recommendation I switched back to the depo after four months on the pill. My periods stopped immediately and so did the headaches and yeast infections. Two years later I switched back to the pill thinking that the depo was preventing me from losing the weight that I had gained due to an anti-anxiety med I had been on (the anxiety was part of the reason I had quit the depo the first time, but it turned out that the anxiety went away when I quit smoking as I had been feeling guilty about the possible effects it could have on my family in the long run).

Again I went on the pill and my periods returned, along with VERY swollen and tender breasts and bloating for two weeks of the month. I think the depo stayed in my system for a little longer this time as it took about four months for the acne to go away and the yeast infections to start. I have also noticed my appetite increasing immensely over the past couple of months and have gained 10lbs in the past month.

Luckily for me, my DH had a vasectomy done a couple of months ago and we are just waiting for the all clear so I can get off all of this junk. I am hoping that I still have a regular period when I get off of the pill and that the yeast infections go away and the acne stays away and maybe I can get rid of this weight as I already exercise 5 times a week and try not to overindulge (hard to do when you feel extremely hungry at ALL hours of the day).

I have no regrets about the depo and I would choose it again over the pill, but that is because I had a more favorable experience with the depo than with the pill.

As someone mentioned, if you do your research on the net you are going to find far more bad experiences than positive ones....why?? because the millions of women on depo that do not expeirence problems with it do not have the need to sign on to birth control support boards....i have been on depo for 2 1/2 years and it has been wonderful - no periods, no other side effects. As for the weight gain, depo can cause an increase in appetite so if you give in and eat more, of course you will gain weight!! if you eat proper, exercise, etc. you will maintain (or lose) weight. I lost over 30lbs by paying attention to what i eat and exercising...

...while its good to look into the possible side effects, it is also important to remember that everyone is different and MILLIONS are using depo with no/few side effects....

First friend informed me that she hasn't had a period since being on Depo shot. She did gain some weight rather quickly than when she was on the pill.

Second friend informed that at first her periods were sparatic. She'd have light bleeding duirng the months. AFter about 5 months she stopped having periods all together.
