Anyone heard about studies that have been done using lithium as a medication for conduct disorder and other aggression and anger disorders?? I was reading about it the other day and just wondered if anyone had any first hand experience using lithium for this purpose?

You people seem to be proud and full of compassion for your dysfunctional and irrational and even abusive behavior. What you need to do is get yourself into a cognitive/behavioral therapists office as soon as possible. Taking lithium and other medications have big chances of cutting your life short, ruining your kidneys and liver, and among other illnesses, all for what? Because you people cannot get yourselves into a therapists office to work on your obviously self defeating behavior and thoughts and beliefs. You people must have had bad parenting from your parents and traumatic experiences. That is why you people lash out at every whim. You need to heal from those traumatic experiences with a good therapist. If you not you will only find yourself alone and in misery. Is your goal for peace, harmony and happyness? Hmmm, maybe it is not. Maybe you people should change your goals.

Well I'm not on these meds wannabeahotguy, I just happened to read a study about it so I thought I'd ask. And not all problems are caused by bad parenting ya know. You ever heard the term biology before psychology. Some people have true chemical imbalances in their brain that no amount of therapy would be able to change. Medications level out the chemicals.. it is only after the chemicals are at correct levels that therapy would be able to help an individual. If you had a bad childhood then Im sorry, but some people have problems that stem from true problems. Many of these people had great parents who did all they could to help their children!!! You should really become more informed before comin on this board and making comments.

SunnyDarkness,

Where is your factual information about some people having chemical embalances and that is the only reason why people behave and think the way they do in such dysfunction and dismay?

I am a psychology major at a university and I understand psychology and biology just fine. And it seems like you have some of your information correct, which is good. First, it is not a fact about the chemical embalance, (it should would be nice) but it is not.

It is more of a problem in my opinion to be labeling people as having chemical embalance instead of taking complete accountability for behavior and thoughts. It is possible it can be done and regardless of bad parenting or good parenting, there are many other factors involved. Drug use (pot, coke, ice etc.) can thrust almost anybody into an induced psychotic depression or into chronic neurosis. So don't take illegal drugs even if you think you feel calm and happy. Then there is the addiction part of the drugs that is beyond a person's will power. It is a miserable cycle. It takes patience and loving support to get through all of it OK and also to have learned a lot from the experience.

Well I ALSO know about psychology and biology. I agree that TONS of people on medication shouldnt be on it and that their problems are caused by things that would be best treated by therapy but that is NOT always the case. Have you seen work done by doctor amen for example? SPECT scans can prove differences in brain functioning, then when the correct medication is given suddenly the brain looks normal when this testing is done, that is not just coincidence. Just because lots of people are on medication just to get a quick fix or have an easier life doesnt mean that it can't benefit people who really need it. schizophrenia for example, medication benefits those people greatly. I had an uncle who has schizophrenia. He was doing awful, he was hospitalized and put on medication, he became his wonderful self again, then he decided pills weren't for him. He progressivley got worse and worse.
You have to be close to someone who has had it happen to them or you have to live it yourself to really know. You should not be opposed to giving medication that is obviously beneficial to someone who without it would never be able to lead a normal life. Everything is not black and white, medicate or dont medicate, there is a gray area too. Don't think that I advocate meds for everything, I don't.. I just got through argueing on the ADD board about that. People medicating their kids with drugs chemically related to cocaine and meth. It really makes me ill. Oh no he won't focus on his classwork better drug him with some speed. It does piss me off that some people think that way, but I also know that some people ARE genuinly sick. Those people only make up about 1-5% of people who claim to be sick. I am diagnosed ADHD, I am not sick. I have a different way of thinking and a different way of enjoying the world, and everyday I thank God for that....for not being like most of the sad pathetic people in this world. I fought with my mom not to put my little brother on stimulant medication. She listened thankfully, otherwise she wouldnt be here today, because I DO NOT LET ANYONE HURT OR DRUG MY LITTLE BROTHER! He is perfect just the way he is. But honestly, if my mom had medicated him, I would have beat the sh*t out of her. Is that crazy? Maybe. Do I think I should be on medication for it? Hell NO!! I should probably work on better ways of getting my point across to others. Please note: I have never actually beat anyone up, I have only defended myself against people older and bigger than me. When something is important to me I don't back down no matter what. I would fight to the death if that's what it took. That is not because I am "mentally defective" it is because I am strong willed and passionate. I do understand your point of view wannabe, and even though I dont completely agree I do like knowing there is a person like you around. It is refreshing after arguing with people who believe medication solves all problems to talk to someone with the EXACT opposite thought process about the issue.

Sunny Darkness,

Very cool, I think your points made are very valid and helpful. I have not heard of Dr.Amen but I will look into it. And of course I agree about the chemical embalance subject to a degree because chemicals in our brains change even when we experience something totally funny or interesting.

My close friend in high school was on lithium for many years because she had a bad case of bipolar. She self mutilated and had roller coaster type emotions. And lithium really did make a change in her life. I am not sure if she ever went to therapy though.

Hi, I remember reading last night on a quest for info about copper which controls or is linked to ATP, Zinc, b-12 and the cells absorption of necessary things so we can fuction properly that...high amounts of copper have been found in the brains of males that are violent - I think they were prisoners and lithium somehow displaces the copper into the cells properly and doesn't allow copper to accumulate in the brain. Oh and there is something called Wilson's disease or Menke's syndrome both dealing with copper on opposite spectrums. So there is cause for taking lithium empirically. I'm no doctor of course. But the way people metabolize essential vitamins and minerals is all different because we are all genetically individual and have over the centuries depleated our food chain to empty nutrition. Also check out b-12 deficiency and folicacid deficiency to balance out any emotions. men who drink beer have a poor absorption of b vitamins. this has been known for over a decade.
