Hi to all. I have been reading posts on this site about the children that have many different troubles in their lives with adhd , bi polar , odd and many other types of illness. My ten year old son has had rages since he was 4 . He was always different from other children and we learned to accept these differences and didnt know any better. He then became very depressed and confused . He threatened suicide many times and raged at his brother. The doctors have him on a drug called olanzapine. It is an antipsychotic drug that has helped him alot with his control , self esteem , no more hearing voices or paranoia . BUT. He has recently devolped diabetes from taking this drug. Has anyone out there had experience with this.? Is there anyone who knows a better substitute for olanzapine other than risperdal.? From what I understand there isnt too many choices when it comes to children. I live in a very small town and the resources are limited. The doctors here dont have a lot of experience with medications for this disorder in children. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you

Hello, just a question. How can you be sure that this med gave him diabetes? Just curious, because as we all know, we are guinea pigs when it comes to meds that deal with the brain, and we know that many meds have caused side effects like liver problems etc. How long has he been on this drug? What did the Dr. say about this and diabetes? Is there any history of diabetes in your family?
If I were you I would go on a search for information to try to find out if this med can and has caused diabetes in any patients. Then you can take it from there. I hope his problem can be cured without insulin, maybe pills, or some can be controlled by losing weight and exercising. I had gestational diabetes 7 yrs ago, they said i have a 50% chance of getting it in the future, especially if i didn't lose weight. I was only 20 pounds over, but, i did lose it.
Anyhow, i would be concerned, alot of these meds can cause other health problems and the companies need to know. Good luck

Hi there . I know this because my son had a urine test before taking olanzapine two months ago. It came back normal . I also have done research on the affects of this drug and yes diabetes is one of the things that can happen but it is rare. The doctor's said it rarely happens. Well it did happen. He had his glucose test and is type 1 diabetes.

I have had Type 1 diabetes since the age of 6 and this post has disturbed me.
Does it say on the paper insert inside the drug that diabetes is a side effect? My God, how can this drug be on the market? Did your doctor say HOW the drug damages the beta cells? I am stunned. Diabetes has altered my life, and not for the better.
I always felt that my case was a result of the MMR vaccine, and of course, a genetic mutation somewhere on my DNA strand that the ingredients of the MMR triggered.
I usually go on this board to get some relief from the diabetes issues--have you posted this information the diabetes board provided here?
