I am 37 years old and have posted here before regarding perimenopausal symtoms. I have my 1st appt. with an endocronologist on Thursday. My family dr. made the appt. for me because I was complaining of irregular periods and anxiety. What can I expect to happen on Thursday? Thanks for any responses!

When I saw a reproductive endocrinologist about all these perimenopausal symptoms she documented information about my family and medical history; then she did a sonogram and extensive blood work. We spent a lot of time talking and the entire appointment lasted a little over an hour.

The first time I went he checked reflexes and felt my neck where my thyroid is. Asked a lot of questions. He then took blood. I then had to go back the next week to get results. I ended up having a scan which you just lie there while the machine takes pictures. It was no big deal.

Do they prescibe medications for peri relief? I was prescibed effexor xr and took it only a couple of weeks and then stopped. I was waiting on this appt. to see what they had to say. Do I talk to her about that kind of stuff? I forgot to say I am also seeing her regarding my pcos.

The endo. that I saw prescribed bcp. Well, let me try to remember, first I was using the hormone patch along with Prometrium, but I was having horrible mood swings, spaciness, and feeling blah. All of these symptoms stem from my fluctuating hormones that I believe were flip flopping every few minutes :). That's when I decided to try bcp.

How did you feel on the Effexor XR? Was it difficult stopping after a couple of weeks? What dosage were you taking? My sister is taking Effexor and doing MARVELOUS. Since going on Effexor she's having a much easier time at this peri stuff than I have been. My current ob/gyn didn't want to prescribe Effexor. She gave me Wellbutrin and if that didn't work then we'd try Effexor. She stated that Effexor make many women feel strange. That surely wasn't the case for two women that I know; it improved their quality of life during this season in our lives.

Hopefully,
I was prescribed 150mg of effexor, but only took the sample packet of the 37.5 and stopped during the 75mg. packet. I actually felt ok just on the samples, but stopped because of reading about the withdrawals and weight gain. Stupid, huh? I promised my dr. I would just take the effexor and not start looking things up on the internet about it. But I am concerned about weight gain with it. My gyn prescribed wellbutrin, also. I loved the energy from it, but I don't think it was good for my anxiety. I didn't feel wierd though on the effexor.

My co-worker who is very petite hasn't gained weight on Effexor. You might not have gained weight. I've heard that I'd lose weight on Wellbutrin...well I'm here to say that I haven't lost weight. I think in the beginning it did curb my appetite and I lost a few ounces :), but according to the scale at the dr. office I've gained 5 more pounds. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I've gained 30 pounds since this peri thing began :(. I do feel better on the Wellbutrin so I'm not going to stop at this point.

So when you stopped the Effexor samples cold turkey you didn't experience any withdrawal?

If I experienced any withdrawal, I didn't feel it. I don't think I was on it long enough for it to even get in my system. I saw the endocronologist today....he took some blood and is going to call me next week and let me know how my hormone levels are. He didn't act like he believed me about having perimenopausal symptoms and he questioned me having the pcod, which I have already been diagnosed with. He said my testerone levels should tell him whether I truly have it or not. I didn't leave his office feeling very positive. I am thinking about starting back on the effexor. I have two 75mg samples left and then I go ahead on to the 150. I probally shouldn't start back that way, but I am going to try it. Does your sister or coworker ever seem tired or complain of being tired? Good luck on the wellbutrin...I have a friend on it and she swears by it. She has never had anxiety issues, though. She says she has no problem getting up in the morning and getting things done during the day. I have the exact opposite problem. I get so tired and my muscles ache so bad, especially in the tops of my legs. If the effexor would help that, I'd take it and deal with the weight gain. I would love to have the energy to actually exercise again. I just don't have it now, though.
