So here we all, lost in search of this grand weight loss plan, and everywhere we look - books, bottles, even our computer screens. Over and over and over we read "Seek Physicians Advice First"
Have you ever done this? And if so...how'd it go?

On my yearly checkup, I ask my doctor questions that I think may help me stay fit. One year, I asked him how much I should weigh. Last year, I asked him how to keep from getting hungry so soon after a meal (protein!). And, this year, I asked him for weight-training suggestions. It's really been very helpful. :)

I think you need to consult your doctor about a weight loss program about as much as you need to consult him about your method of tying your shoelaces.

It shows up on websites, etc., because of potential liability. But it always surprises me how often poster say one ought to consult their physician. Right. In the course of a routine physical (speaking of which, do many people have one annually like Annee?), sure . . . but making a special trip just for that? No way. I can't even get good information about diet for a GI situation (because, as it turns out, it doesn't exist coming out of double-blind or other studies, but then say so). Forget weight loss.

I think it depends on your weight and activity level. Maybe not for actual dieting, but for starting an exercise program. If you are very overweight and inactive then I think you should have a physical and talk to your doc before starting an exercise program or you could really do some harm.

Auntjudy, yes, you are correct. This is there for potential liablity issues. If someone takes a pill, or tries a special diet and they drop dead or cause themselves a heart attack then the person (or there family) can sue that company. Basically, you don't need to consult your Dr. if you decide to run on a treadmill, but if someone severely overweight decides they are going to start sprinting everyday for 30 min, that could be a problem and they should consult their Dr. first. It is a legal thing :-)
