I won't go into my current challenge right now cause I already have a post, but I had a question. I never used to eat much fruit, not b/c I didn't like it, but b/c I knew it had sugar in it and I never ate much sugar. Since I quit smoking, I am craving it more. BUT, I am eating a lot of fruit, probably four servings a day:
Banana in am
fruit yogurt am
Prunes and dried apricots for afternoon snack
apples with peanut butter at night
I found out apples and bananas have about 27g of sugar, I think the dried fruit is about the same. ANyone know off hand how much sugar is TOO much? I also know there are two kinds of sugar, one is bad the other, well, better. Sucrose and fructose. The first is the bad, the second is the natural and I know it gets used better, but sugar is sugar and it will get stored. Should I cut the fruit out of my diet? Am I eating too many a day? I don't always eat all of them everyday, just depends on what I have at the time and when My last trip to the store was (yesterday, fully stocked now). I gained 15 pounds in two months and now am trying to lose it. I am working out and eating well for the most part, this is just one thing I am not sure about. On the fence if you will.
Thanks for any input! (I will probably ask my dr on thurs, but I'd still like to hear what you all think)

I would say watch how much peanut butter you use. A little goes a long way. Fruit is great for you. Your body can NOT tell the diffrence in sugar(s). It is just fruit has all the nutrients your body will need and LOW calories and LOT OF FIBER. Sugar from junk has high calories and little to no nutrients.
Apples are great because there are many kinds and they are high in fiber which keeps you fuller longer. Good job keep up the good work.

I don't care what these special diets say, I eat as much fruit as I want. Fruit is good for you and if you are exercising and watching what you eat, you will lose weight. Keep eating that fruit!

Try sticking with low sugar fruits and low GI fruits. Apples and bananas are the worst, the better fruits are all berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry), cantaloupe, nectarines, grapefruits. Some people can handle fruits better than others, I try to stick with 2 servings a day, mostly strawberries and cantaloupe. If you see that you are not losing or gaining weight than you have to try cutting a little out.

thank you! Don't know yet what I will do, but I will try to keep servings in mind. I know that as long as I don't go over calories and I watch sugar intake, I should be okay. I do keep an eye on the peanut butter, as a tablespoon has 190 calories. Anyhoo, gonna keep working out and so forth and maybe just cut down the number of servings I have a day? Def better than getting that snickers bar for some sugar though, that is for sure!

I don't think apples and bananas make you fat, but for those who have a bit of a problem keeping their blood sugar under control, which is the key to weight loss, apples and bananas are not the best choices.

ONe thing I didn't know-bananas have saturated fat in them! I didn't think fruit HAD fat! It isn't much mind you , but it can sneak in there if you are watching that and didn't know.

DEFINITELY keep eating the fruit! I am a huge advocate of fruit and I think that is one of the biggest things that bothers me about Low Carb and Atkins...you need fruit! Yes, it has sugar in it, but it's obviously naturally occurring! There is no way you can compare an apple to a snickers bar.
I love apples with peanut butter and I think that is SUCH a healthy snack - keep eating it. It gives you good fat, keeps you satisfied, and is better than many many other snacks out there. And bananas are great, too with peanut butter ( you should give it a try)....Good luck with your goal!

I think that if you BALANCE the "sugar" from the fruit with the rest of your diet you will be fine. ie don't drink soda, don't use sugar in coffee/tea, avoid processed foods and eat good/naturally occurring carbs.
When I tried Atkins my body went crazy due to cutting out fruit. Not because I eat a lot of sugar but because pretty much the only place I get my sugar is fruit. Also the fiber. TMI, I'm sorry but my bowels went haywire too even though I was eating a lot of veg (8-10 cups) in the form of salads.
I but the organic peanut butter, mostly for my son. The regular variety has tons of added sugar whereas the organic has none, just peanuts. It doesn't taste quite the same to begin with but it is still very good, especially w/ something sweet like an apple.

I LOVE peanut butter and banana sandwhiches! YUMMY
Also, I found that my whole wheat CHEX have way more calories than the seemingly normal amounts that other cereals have. LIke 230 calories compared to say 150. Anyone know why that is?

I have decided to cut all fruit except for 1/2 an apple w/peanut butter for a snack. I will eat fruit here and there, but not daily. I am going back to eating lean pockets, my light popcorn, and celery and carrots for snacks too (low cal). I will continue my rigorous work outs and hopefully see something soon!

I have read that fruits, like apples, berries, cantaloupe, oranges, and a bunch of vegetables as well, are great for dieting because of their high fiber content. The fiber helps flush unwnated toxins out of your body that may halt your weight loss. Also, have you ever heard of the negative calorie diet? It states that many fruits and veggies burn off more calories during their digestion than are actually in the foods themselves. For ex, an apple has about 60-80 calories in it. But, it burns about 100 calories just to digest it. So their is actually a net loss of 20-40 calories without you actually doing anything but eating. Research it and tell me what you think.

Aimes, that is very interesting. Where would I go to look into that? I know the apples I eat are large (Golden Delicious) and have appx 125 calories and 20ish sugars. Of course, I am going to keep eating them, but just watching my other intakes as well. I was eating a banana, dried apricots, prunes and apples in one day. That might have been a little excessive. If you have any idea on how I could research that let me know-I do work with a dietician, so I could ask her too, she sure might know!

The best choices of fruit during weight loss are the low-glycemic fruits. These include 1 small apple, 1/2 grapefruit, a small orange, peach, pear, plums, and/or 1 cup of any berries, or a small serving (6) of strawberries. While bananas are a great source of potassium, they are high on the glycemic list. You could probably get by with a small banana a few times a week. Dried fruits are highest in concentrated sugars and should be avoided if you want to lose weight.
For a real healthy apple snack, buy some organic flaxseeds, toast them in a low 200 degree oven for 20 minutes. Grind in a small coffee grinder and store in refrigerator. Mix a few tbsp with cinnamon and steviaplus, and dip apple slices in and eat. :)
An excellant choice of a berry is the cranberry. Fresh cranberry juice, diluted to your preference, and sweetened with stevia, is great for flushing toxins and getting rid of cellulite. You can also use pure cranberry juice/concentrate from your local health food store. Be sure it's pure and not sweetened with any sweeteners/other fruit juices. I am on the Fat Flush Plan (Ann Louise Gittleman) and I have been drinking 8oz of cranberry juice every day for 2 years now. I stock up on fresh cranberries during season, freeze them and make my own juice during the year.
I believe all fruits are good for you but if weight loss is your goal you might have to eliminate or limit some choices for awhile.
