 I thought I'd migrate over here from the depression board, figuring my weight probably plays a roll in my depression, and visa versa.... Hi!

Stats: Female, 5' or 5' 1", hover at about 170. Was thin most of my life, gained a about 30 from my first pregnancy, and about 30 from my second. Have been overweight for about 7 years. Tired all the time. Feel heavy on my feet. Easily breathless. Had one successful diet.

Motivational stories? :) What got you up? What made you change your ways? What made you decide that losing weight trumped your former lifestyle? What was your inspiration? What things did you change? Was the change gradual or immediate? What kept you from falling off the wagon? How did you do it? How much weight have you lost? Have you been able to maintain?

I'd really appreciate any help I can get with this. Thank you so much!

Hello EoR,

I'm brand new to the site.....

Stats: Female, 5'7", now 175 pounds, have gained quite a significant amount of weight since I got married 4 years ago, lost about 10 pounds almost 3 years ago and put it all back on again. I have just recently lost another 10 pounds but am still 10 pounds heavier than I was when I lost the weight 3 years ago.

I don't know if my story will help you, but I share with good intentions. My motivation came to me after I went shopping to buy a new pair of jeans and I couldn't fit into the size I thought I was OR a size up from that, I just about died! I said, "That's it! I am doing something about this". I guess just the fact that I was disgusted by myself in the mirror made me want to change my lifestyle habits. You don't think about how much you actually eat until you try "watching" what and how much you eat. I was horrified when I realized how much crap I was slamming down my throat and thinking I wasn't going to gain anything from it. I, like you, wouldn't eat for any other reason than, I was hungry, so I was gonna eat something. Only, I would just keep eating and eating because "it tastes SO GOOD". I have now learned how to listen to my stomach to hear when it is FULL. It's all about portion sizes. I don't deprive myself of things I love to eat, I just pay attention to the 'serving size' on the label and try to keep myself close to that. I have also been trying to just eat healthier no matter what too. Another motivation for me is that my I am in my best friends wedding this summer, and I have not seen my friends or family (they are in MN and I am in PA) for well over a year and a half, so I want to knock their socks off when I get there! I heard somewhere (I don't remember where), that you are more likely to lose weight if you have a goal or "deadline" (like my friend's wedding) to work toward.

Now, about actually working out. I hadn't done anything exercise-wise since I was back in HS when I played basketball for 5 years...so starting to exercise wasn't easy for me. The same day I had my horrible shopping realization I went to WalMart and bought one of those stability balls and a dvd to go with it called "BLT-Butt, Legs, and Tummy; on a ball". I started out with that and then got another video and another, and now just about a couple of months ago I got a cardio/circuit training video and started doing that. Since I started the cardio, I have lost 10 pounds and who knows how many inches (I didn't measure myself before I started :(). Even after starting the first video I was feeling so much better. I had more energy, I felt healthier, and I felt better about myself even before I started noticing weight loss.

I think just the key is, eat smaller amounts in more meals a day, drink lots and lots of water, and incorporate some exercise-slow to start off with and then make it more intense as you become stronger and more used to it again.

Well, sorry to blab your ear off. I hope what I said helped somewhat. :)

Good luck with everything!

Thank you so much for this! Very inspirational. Thank you. :) And, congrats on the weightloss! I bet you will knock their socks off. We're going up to Iowa at the end of May to see my boyfriend's sister graduate from highschool, and I've never met most of that side of his family, so, there's my goal to work for!

Again, thank you!

I agree wholeheartedly. If you've got a goal in mind, instead of generic "I want to lose weight", it really helps. Make sure you have that goal.

And, when people begin to notice, you REALLY feel good and motivated. When you start to hear the comments about you looking even better, it's fantastic. I've lost a lot of weight, and a friend told me he almost couldn't recognize me. I was buzzing. It's a great feeling. Good luck!

Congrats on losing weight! How much? What was your motivation? I think, mostly, my reason at the moment is because of my health. I have a hard time breathing... I don't know if this is weight related or if it's asthma acting up, but, hey, losing the weight can't hurt, regardless!

Thank you for the reply. :)

Since last May, I've lost 110lbs. I just hit the 110 mark yesterday. My goal is 180-185. I'm 40lbs way from my goal, and it almost makes me want to tear up thinking about it. 40lbs is nothing to me now. After dropping 110, 40 seems easy. However, it's actually the toughest part. I'm at 223lbs right now, and honestly, because of the progress, I'm very happy, so it's difficult to push myself, but I know I need to.

My motivation was partially health, partially vanity, and partially irritation. I wanted to be healthier (I just ran two miles the other night; I could bearly do a city block or two when I started), I wanted to look better (I'm fitting into mediums/larges for shirts now, when I started I was borderline XXXL), and I was sick of the after effects. I'd always wanted to be a thin, healthy person who ate well and exercised. I'd always planned on doing it "someday" and finally took measures into my own hands after I found out my weight.

I never looked 333lbs, but I went to the doctor for a persistent flu/cold, and when I saw my weight, my heart sank on me. I needed to do something about it, so I did. I started by walking every day for 30 minutes, and one day, I told myself it wasn't enough, so I tried running. After three months of shin splints and exasperation, I was able to run without pain. Now, as I said, I can do miles instead of yards.

It's taken a lot of work, and I've got a lot to go, but I'm very excited to see the end in sight. And my word, what happiness I'll have when I can have a Pepsi again, and know that I'm living the kind of lifestyle that will allow me to drink it and burn it off without worrying about becoming overweight again.

I just wanted to say, how inspirational is your story?!!! :) That's awesome! Congratulations at losing all of that weight, and I'm sure with it, you have gained so much in other ways. :D Now my measly 25-30 pound goal seems so little. I did my weekly weigh-in this morning and after about 3 weeks of the same weight I had lost another pound, so now the total is 11. I'm getting there, gradually.

Well, good luck to you MobileSprout and you too EoR, and God Bless

Thanks. A few people have been really 'inspired' by my story. Particularly one guy I worked with. He's very, very, very big, and I think when I told him about it, he was really happy to know that someone really WAS able to come back from such places. The last 45 pounds are a killer. I'm having trouble with them, but as the subject of the thread says, it's all about motivation. I have to keep motivated.

Keeping with it and being diligent pays off. More than anything, you need to stick with it and find that motivation.

That's really awesome, MobileSprout. I am so happy you were able to find the motivation and will to lose so much weight. That IS very inspiring. How hard was it the first few weeks? Did you feel hungry all the time? I saw in another thread that you have yogurt and a hard boiled egg for dinner every night. Doesn't that leave you starving at bed time? Do you take any supplements? How tall are you? See, my current weight lies about where your goal weight is, but I'm female and just barely over 5ft. :)

Thank you so much for sharing. I wish you the best of luck with that 45. You know you can do it! :)

And, thank you, Frogurl for your support and advice. I'm going to try that 3 apple a day suggestion I saw that you were trying. :) Good luck!

The first few weeks were actually the easiest, in a weird way. The cold/flu I had took away my appetite almost entirely, so my stomach shrank considerably. I didn't quite drinking pop cold-turkey, I put myself down to one can a day at first, and then quit after that. However, it was a bit tough weaning myself from some of the things I loved. The exercise was hard to get into, only because I was so out of shape I didn't believe I could get INTO shape at times. But now, my rib cage sticks out past my stomach, and I can do 150 stomach crunches a day. You never see the progress as it's happening.

I actually had no appetite at all, and that sort of worried me for a bit. I couldn't eat. Whenever I sat down to eat, I ate a bite or two, and I couldn't go from there. I was sort of worried about the cold I had, and such, so I didn't feel like eating. But, when my appetite came back, it was much smaller.

About the yogurt and egg; I only have the egg if I've been weight lifting.
:)

Yes, actually, I do get hungry before I go to bed. Very, very hungry. But, two things:

1: I like the feeling, strangely. I guess I'm a bit of a masochist with that. When you aren't starving yourself, when you're hungry, if your body doesn't get food, it strips a bit of fat off of your reserves. Or, so I read. So, in my mind, it helps me. It's helping me get rid of a little extra fat in exchange for a little discomfort.

2: I'm an insomniac. I need a lot of sleep, but I can't get myself to go to sleep. So, being hungry helps me, because it makes me think "If I go to sleep, I'll be able to wake up and eat breakfast!" So, it helps me in that way.

It's not an easy diet, for sure. But, it works. For me. Really, really well. Alongside "sticking with it", "realizing you have a problem", and "eating breakfast", the next biggest factor in losing weight is hitting your personal stride. This year, I found it (in January). And it works wonders for me. I don't know how it'd work for everyone else, but for me, it's a dream. I'm so happy with it, and I'm so happy with the way things are going for me.

The only "supplement" I take is a daily multi-vitamin. A simple One-A-Day for men. I swear by them, actually. Considering I'm giving up a lot of food and restricting my caloric intake, I need to make sure I get a healthy amount of vitamins and minerals so that I can function efficiantly.

Height, I'm 6'1". So, I'm bound to be on the higher side of male weight anyway. My parents are shocked, especially my dad, that I want to be around 180. But, that's my goal. I don't want to be skinny, I just want to look healthy.

And thanks for the well wishes. As of today, it's only 40 to go until my goal. I'm floored!
