I have narrowed the source of my gradual weight gain down to my birth control. I have been using the Ortho Evra patch for the last 10 month and in that time have gained 10 lbs. I exercise 5 times a week and changed my diet just in case that was the problem but no improvement is showing. I don't want to abandon the patch because it has greatly improved the quality of my skin. I'm looking for alternative birth control that has limited weight gain associated with it. Can you tell me what works for you? :jester:

Hello Miss Murphy...I've been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen since May of 2004 and haven't gained any weight. I haven't been exercising much or eating right either, so I know for sure the pill has not made me gain any weight.

ALL forms of birth control can cause weight gain. What causes weight gain for you, might cause no gain in someone else. It affects each person different.

I know most docs say the pill does Not cause the gain but I scream YES IT DOES. Maybe it is just water weight or whatever but when I was on the pill I had a few (5lb) vanitiy pounds that would not go away. I have been active for years with good exercise. Running 5 to 6 days a week weight train the whole 9 yards and I have always ate healthy but when I was on that pill I could not get rid of that 5 lbs. When I quit taking the pill 3 years ago the weight went bye bye. Same routine with everything.
Everyone is diffrent. I do retain alot of water naturally ( I HAVE to watch my sodium and I drink about a gallon of H2O a day) so maybe with me it was only water but it was there.

I am fighting weight gain too and the only thing I can figure is my new bc too. I started seasonale from Depo the first week of Feb and since have gained 15 pounds, and we are talking one week fine the next the pants won't button. There are other factors for me: quit smoking in Oct, but from Oct to Feb stayed the same weight. Could be from surgery, very inactive since December, but yet again, no gain until Feb. OR stress, surgery, husband lost job, having to move and sell condo etc....But 15 in two months seemed like an awful lot. My mother and hubby both now think BC, as I did not gain a single pound on Depo. Then I read that BC hasn't ever been officially linked to weight gain. So, I of course freaked out. None the less, I am going back on Depo tomorrow. My dr gave me the okay to do aerobics so for the last two weeks I have been working out again. It is harder since I still can't do much with my back surgery and I am not 22 anymore (that was my age when I lost 25 lbs), I am now 27 and who knows what my hormones and metabolism is doing. I am returning to work next week too after being on disability for eight months. I am hoping that will make a difference too. I will let ya know if the weight comes off. But then, I won't know if it was the pill, or me working out again :(

Like the original poster, I am also on the Ortho Evra patch.... I also have gained a little weight since starting it. I was also told that their is no proof that BC causes weight gain, but now that I have read the last couple posts I honestly believe it does! I work out 3-4 days a week for about an hour and I am doing a low carb/lower fat diet... my fiance is also doing the same diet and he has lost about 25 pounds in the past 3 months where I am struggling to stay the same or loose 2 or 3... its very frustrating, because I do not want to go off the patch for reasons that I definalty am not ready for a baby and because the patch is the only form of BC that has actually worked and kept me regular!!! I dont know what to do......

I have been on the Ortho Evra patch for 2 months now and I was really worried about gaining weight. I have noticed that my stomach looks fuller but my weight is still within a few lbs of what it was before I started. I am going to started working out more and eating healthy so that I don't gain any weight because it seems like with this birth control it is really easy to gain weight.

I have been taking Ortho-Tri cyclen for the past 6 years now. When I first started taking it I didn't gain anything. But since I got married 3 years ago I have put on about 20 lbs. And guess what...I can't seem to get rid of it. I am working out about 5 times a week AND I even got a trainer. He was the one that mentioned to me that sometimes birth control can make you gain weight or stop you from losing it. So my next step is to see a doctor and see if I can take anything else. I really don't want to try anything because Ortho-Tri cyclen has worked great for me. So the main issue here is every birth control is different for everyone and the way their body reacts, some gain weight orders don't.

Plantlover, I am in the exact same boat you are. I have been on Ortho-Tri Cyclen for the past 4 years, but since I got married I have gained a lot of weight, probably at least 20-30 pounds. A few months ago I got switched to a generic form of Ortho Tri Cyclen called Trinessa, and I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I started working out back in August, and just within the last month I have actually lost weight (10 pounds to date). So, maybe see about the generic form? Dunno if it will help, like everyone's saying, everyone's body reacts differently to medication.

you know that there are statistics about weight gain and marriage-might not be bad to check into that. Just like I can't be 100% sure that my weight gain is from Bc, so I am looking at changing a few things like going back to work and eating better and less sugar., Unfort, I may never know what caused the weight gain. But, changing methods is one way to find out, hence why I got back on depo today.

Thank you for sharing that information. I will definetley talk to my doctor about that. It's just so hard not be able to lose 20 lbs especially when I have tried everything. I even got blood work done for my thyroid to make sure my metabolism and everything is working fine. And sure enough it is. So this is my last resort, try to change the birth control. Thanks again FrogGurl. ;)

Rach12,
How long after going off the pill did you notice the weight loss? i have been on the pill for 15v years, and have always said that the pill has caused me to hold onto that extra 5 pounds I cant get rid of. i just went off it last week, and i was wondering how long it took you to notice some weight loss?
Thanks
