im 21 male 5'9 and 205....well i had a nice diet going. over about 4 weeks i dropped about 7 lbs (got down to 200lbs from 207). then i went on spring break in panama city, drank about 10 beers a day, gained every bit of the weight back. it was awesome at the time but now i hate myself for it. since ive been back, im back to the 1600 calories a day not drinking any beer, all water, and im not seeing any effects on the scale. ive been 205 for about 5 days now. i sit on my *** all day, ive been going to the driving range a couple times a week just to improve my game and get out from behind the desk. according to all these calorie counters, i should be consuming about 2500 calories a day with my height and weight and sedentary lifestyle. so why am i not losing weight???

here is my daily menu
breakfast: i pkg blueberry mini muffins (250 calories)
lunch: ham and cheese hot pocket (310 calories)
snack: chips and salsa (300 calories)
dinner: 2 slices of pepperoni pizza (approx 700 calories)

and all i drink is water. no soda or alcohol.

what am i doing wrong? i know all these foods are fairly high in fat, but they are also filling and im not exceeding 1600 calories a day. shouldnt i be losing weight? or is it the fat in these foods keeping that from happening??

First, don't feel bad about gaining weight on your vacation. A lot of people diet before a vacation so that they can relax and eat what they want for a few days. Think of it as "paying in advance."

As for your current diet, it's obviously worked for you before, so stick with it...sort of. I think the reason that your scale isn't registering a weight-loss may be because your diet is totally lacking in roughage. In fact, your menu is one long list of constipating foods. In other words, you've probably lost fat but it won't register on your scale until nature calls.

Do you think you could swap that package of blueberry muffins for a bowl of Raisin Bran with non-fat milk? And how 'bout adding some green pepper to those pizzas? Broccoli is delicious with those ham and cheese hot pockets, and it's only 15 calories for half a cup (I buy it frozen in a bag and microwave it with the Hot Pocket). And be sure to drink LOTS of water. :)

Beer is not good for the body. I am a 20 year old college student myself and attend one of the top five party schools in the nation, where every other girl I see has a 'beer-belly.' The students here are in terrible shape! It's considered normal to have a chunkball-belly here. I'm glad you came to your senses and were able to recognize beer as part of the problem.

I think the other part of the problem is that you aren't working out. That would make a difference and you know it. Of course, most of us don't enjoy doing it though. You'd feel much better if you got in a routine though. I'm sure you know some gym-buffs in college that you could go work out with? If not, try buying an exercise tape you can do in the privacy of your own room.

Dude your diet needs a total makeover. Those foods are so high in fat. Your body does not have to go to your fat sorage to get energy because you keep just putting more in. Yes the calories are kinda low but with that much sat and trans fat availiable your body is simply maintaing.
How about a few changes at first. Like B-fast the cereal is good with soy or skim milk.

Maybe add a fruit as a snack like a apple. High fiber and it will keep you fuller longer. Good luck.

m not sure about this but i think 21 male 5'9 .With looking at your menu. You must feel starved? And if a body feels starved , then the body will hold onto the weight. Try eating meat potatoes and veggies for supper. You will feel more full and changing your eating habits too. I love pizza and chips with salsa but I am planning on eatting those once a week as a weekend treat. If I am correct they are the kinds of food to avoid to much of too.

You're eating way too many carbs and not enough protein. Add some fruit in there too.

At your height and weight, on a good plan, you should definitely be losing a little more than 7 lbs in a month. I know it is not good to lose weight quickly, but on a well planned program, you will be losing enough to keep your motivation up.

Move the pizza, beer and chips to your "free" day.

There's nothing healthy in your diet! No produce of any kind so there's a huge problem. The closest thing to healthy in your menu is the pkg blueberry muffin and I'm sure it's not from a health food store so it's pretty likely packed w/ sodium and sugar. You packed on a ton of calories by drinking that much beer a day so it will take time to work that off. You also have a ton of water retention I'm sure. Your diet consists of a lot of salt and salt retains water as does sugar. Make over your entire diet if you are serious about losing weight and/or gaining muscle cause your current diet is very unhealthy.

well if it makes you guys feel any better ive dropped the pizza from my diet. for example, last night i had 4 crunchy tacos from taco bell with no cheese. (150 calories each) thats the corn shell, the beef, and lettuce. i top it with a packet of fire sauce.

tonight im making deer chili. venison, chili seasoning, tomato sauce, onions.

does any of this sound better? im a meat and potatoes kinda guy so a piece of celery and a peppermint arent gonna cut it for dinner.

You need a diet extreme makeover. More fruit, veggies and stay away from Taco Bell! Stay away from processed anything watch when you're eating carbs. Go ahead and eat most of them in the morning, but taper off in the evening. Eat more lean chicken, turkey & fish and if you must eat beef make sure it's lean.

I think that it would be a good idea for you to go to a weight loss center. They will help you understand what it means to eat healthy. Also, it will be a motivation tool to know that someone will be monitoring your weight.

Your diet consists of alot of empty calories. You've got to add some veggies in there along with fruit. And it would be beneficial for your metabolism to eat three meals a day plus one or two snacks. I went to Diet Center 15 years ago at 150. Got down to 115. Am still maintaining at 120-122.

This is what I had today:

Breakfast: Two glasses water, 3 egg white omlet (sautee onions, bell pepper and mushrooms in Pam spray), and a small bowl of cream of wheat (made with water and 1 teaspoon Country Crock LIGHT)

Mid Morning Snack: Small apple and slice of cheddar cheese.

Lunch: Healthy Choice Meal and Fat Free Jello Chocolate pudding.

Mid Day Snack: 1/2 bag Healthy Choice Popcorn

Dinner: Salad with tomatoes, mushrooms, lettuce, fist full of turkey beef and two-three tablespoons light dressing. Banana

Learn about what foods are good for your body and get excited about treating your body like a temple! :)

if im not mistaken, calories are calories and 1500 of them is 1500 of them. can i not eat 1500 calories of celery and lose the same amount of weight as 1500 calories of hot pockets and tacos???

WOW! Calories are not just calories. You must eat a balanced diet. Taco Bell is a big NO. And hot packets are loaded with preservatives. Don't get frustrated, but read what JanetinHouston said she had today. That's what I mean by a balanced meal....egg whites, cereal and fruit. If you don't like what she had, then try a turkey sandwich for lunch with pretzels or tuna with a hard boiled egg white and celery. For dinner try grilled chicken and broccoli & a side salad. Are you eating out because you don't like or can't cook? Eating out is not the best way to lose weight. If you must eat out, try a grilled chicken sandwich from Chick Fil a or Wendy's and sub the fries for fruit.

Maw, you can answer your own question by the "shape" you are currently in. No, not all eating habbits / calories are the same. If they were, you wouldn't be struggling, right?

There have been several mentions of posts saying to change the diet but you keep going back to the "but, what if........."

Most of us here that have been successful with weight loss and management were not born thin, we work at it and eat healthy (most of the time).

You need to either buy a self help book or go to a counselor. My bet for the most successful outcome would be to get enrolled in a weight loss clinic/program. When the pounds start coming off, you feel better and look better, I think you will be more motivated to learn what healthy eating is all about.

nutrition isnt the question on this thread. what youre telling me is...if i eat 1500 calories of "healthy" foods as you suggested, i will lose more weight than if i ate 1500 calories of oreo cookies???????? thats all im asking. nutrition is another thread. all were talking about here is calories.

Point being if you're only consuming crappy food then it will have negative effects opposed to if you ate healthy food (w/ the same amount of calories). You want to loose the weight you put on, but don't seem to want to change your bad eating habits. You can be a "meat & potatoes" guy, but you DO NOT and SHOULD NOT consume meat w/ every meal and should have vegetable an fruit incorporated in your diet everyday. Your goal should be to keep healthy and your diet is very unhealthy. It will effect you in the sort run and definitely be very noticeable in many ways in the long run.

I agree with you Maw. 1500 calories is 1500 calories! And you will lose weight if you stick with that. I certainly have, and that's with a tendency to eat way too much chocolate!

The reason we all mention nutrition is that we're all experienced dieters, and we know that if you don't give your body what it wants (and needs), then you'll have more hunger and cravings, and you'll feel less like exercising. And those are the problems that have sabotaged our own attempts at dieting. At least, that's my take.

But, you're a young guy, and the truth is, you could probably live on beer and pork rinds and feel fine. So, do what you have to, to stay under 1500 calories and I'm sure you'll get to the weight you want.

For-what-it's-worth, I think the lettuce in that taco and the hot sauce did you a world of good! :)

thank you!!!! occassionally i get cravings for something green. last night for example i ate a can of french cut grean beans. they were great.

i got to the weight im at because i ate whatever i wanted, whenever i wanted. that works as a kid. but once you get a little older it stops working. im guessing my metabolism slowed down and my eating habits didnt. therefore i packed on the pounds. before i started dieting, i was easily eating 2500-3000 calories a day. that added up to excessive weight in a hurry. plus i started drinking beer so that definitely didnt help anything.

im estimating my daily caloric needs as about 2200. thats at 200 lbs and sedentary lifestyle. i walk to and from classes everyday and do a little running around town running errands and stuff but thats about it. ive also started doing 100 pushups and 100 crunches every night before bed. hopefully that will add up to something.
