Okay ladies... I know I had a thread about my Dr. Vent a few weeks back .
I now have a update and I am even more furious than I was back then.
I went in for numerous symptoms, aniexy, racing HB, Irregular periods, mood swings, sore breast, not sleeping the list goes on and on....
I asked to get my hormone level tested and instead she insisted on a Ultra Sound saying it could be Fibroids. Well NO fibroids just a tiny one that the tech could hardly see.
I have waited two weeks for her to go over my formulary plan of Meds. my insurance will cover to help with symptoms.
I get a call today from the nurse telling me the Dr. said I should just go to a psychologist and that she doubts it is hormonal? I hit the roof!!!
She told me 42 is way too young to have symptoms and instead of meds. perhaps I should just go talk to someone, all the while my hormone level has yet to be checked!
To date I have spent out of pocket close to 3 grand on various test for the racing heart beat and aniexy all have found nothing. The logical thing to me is to check my hormones.
I said my peace which was not at all nice and told them I would find a new Dr. The Nurse pleaded with me not to and that she would have the Dr. "personally" call me and talk about this.
If I have one more bad Dr. experience I don't know what I will do

Sorry to hear what has been happening for you. I suggest change Dr's. Ask around and find one that suits you better. I did that, and am so much happier now.
My Dr did tell me no use doing a hormone level test until no period for 3 mths as it won't give an accurate result. I got to day 65!! So near and yet so far. Maybe send her this site to read up and she may have a better understanding.
Good luck
Jude

Funny you should mention this site, I had to laugh because I did bring it up to her. You know what she said?? If I had a dollar for every person who comes in with a diagnosis from the internet. I have tried 3 different Dr.s'.
This last one really made me angry for obvious reasons but not only that she kept me waiting for hours in the exam room and then rushed me out the door in a matter of minutes. I had to chase her down the hall, ridiculous.

Oh Bell , I am soo sorry you are having this experience with the doctor. I know what it is like as I have a doctor and no matter what my reason for seeing her is, her answer is always "It's anxiety". Until yesterday when I almost fell over. I took my daughter in for a check up as she was in the hospital for 4 days over the March break. While in the waiting room I grabbed a pamphlet on Hot flashes and Meno. Had it in my hand when we went into the Marissa app't. We gabbed about how she was doing and everything. Then when I was leaving I said " I have to make an app't for myself, held up the pamphlet and said "I think this is happening " She says (this is where I almost fell over) " Oh yeah isn't it lovely, I am going through the beginnings of that myself, Make an app't and come see me we can compare" she laughed and I went on my way. I never have luck with Doctors...what would the odds be that mine would also be in peri??? Anyway I really hope she calls you back and is understanding about what you going through. Take care Bell I will be thinking of you and hope it works out....Lesley
By the way , I don't know if I mentioned it , but I am 42 too and I think my doctor is somewhere around that maybe 43,44.

 Thanks! I often think WE know more about our own health than the Dr.'s do? Sometimes I really feel like they want us to spend as much money as we can on Test. She told me for aniexy she can't really give me anything else. I take Buspar and it makes me so tired. It was insulting to tell me to see a shrink!
Before I found these boards I just might go do that but I know I'm not alone and I also know we all can't be having the same symptoms "just because".
My periods have become irregular too.
Sorry about you daughter talk about aniexy nothing is worse than worrying about your kids!! Hope she is 0kay now?
My Dr. is 35 and apparently clueless. I find I know more about Meds. than she does from all the research I do. All they seem to know is what the drug Rep's tell them.
By the way, when I got home from picking my son up from school there was a message from the nurse telling me she ordered the test but I don't think I want to deal with their office again!!
We need Gyno's that don't deliver babies!!! One's that deal strickly with Menopause and Hormones would be even better

Bell,
That just stinks, and unfortunately I can totally relate. I am 45 and went to my GP with anxiety, insomnia, depression, and wierd muscle twitches. I was actually crying in her office, and I told her I felt so hormonal that it had to be PM. She said no way, I was too young.....So, I too have been to a gajillion docs trying to find answers. I actually have blood tests in hand that show my levels are in PM and the docs still want to treat me only for the depression with scary drugs that make me feel worse. They say that the levels fluctuate so much that they don't mean anything... UGH! I truly hope you find help soon. I am spending my days on the phone looking for someone in my area that can help. Let us know how you're doing...meanwhile, I really appreciate the support on these boards!.

Hi Bell,
Sorry to hear about your experience with your dr. If you had a tests done (blood, EKG, etc.) and all things show that you're healthy and things have been ruled out, don't bother asking your hormone tested until you start missing your period for at least 6 mos straight. Even if you got the hormone test that you asked for, it will probably show up "normal". We know you're going thru peri - and you know it - your dr. just doesn't know it! Either find another dr. or take action on your own to help yourself get some relief from your symptoms. I was put on Paxil CR which is not normally used to relieve menopause symptoms but it did make me feel better within a month and from there it gave me the energy to learn what I can do to help myself with some of the symptoms I was having - this includes researching the net, exercising, taking 160 mg of soy daily, taking tons of supplements, vits, and really coming to terms that I was getting old and going thru meno and it wasn't a serious illness.
I had my hormones tested twice - first, it showed up normal - that I wasn't in peri-meno or meno - then 9 mos later and not having a period for 7 mos, the range showed I was in post-meno. In other words, no test will show you in "peri-meno" - it's either normal or it's post-meno.

Hi Bell~
I am just so sorry you are having to deal with this. Molly is so right about the results of hormonal testing. Like she said you know and we know what you are going through. A test that shows nothing might be enough for this doctor to be a smart @#$ and say I told you it was not peri blah blah blah. What are your biggest complaints symptom wise. A very dear friend of mine is a Naturopathic doctor and has helped me out so much I can't tell you. Anyway if it's anxiety, aches, hot flashes whatever , I will ask her what is the best natural way to treat them. Its inexpensive and well worth trying . It really can work. I take a homeopathic remedy for anxiety, Minerals for my muscle aches, B vitamins (important for any woman ) and a few different herbs. Let me know if you wish to know more. I am sorry you have to deal with this . By the way, Thanks for asking about Marissa, she is doing very very well. She had a sinus and upper respiratory infection that caussed her to vomit sooo much she dehydrated very quickly. We kept lots of fluids in her but she had a fever for 5 days when the vomiting started and she just kept getting sicker. Doctor kept saying its viral but I got a doctor that checked her urine and it showed ketones and bilirubin meaning her liver was working hard to fight it. 72 hours on antibiotics and IV fluids and she turned around. OH you are so right , having a sick child is soooo very sad. Anyway...take care..L

I too have felt like doctors don't understand. Sometimes you don't know whether to scream or cry. I was sent to a psychiatrist, that was a joke. I went a couple of times and thought the heck with this. It seemed like all she asked was "do you feel like hurting yourself or some one else?" In the end I said if I get asked that one more time I will hurt someone. It was a waste of time. You get tired of doctors saying your normal but you feel like garbage. I've been doing this for a year. I really went through a bad time and have wondered how I survived it. Granted I am better than I was last May emotionally. A lot in thanks to these boards and seeing that so many of us go through the same thing. Another problem is you get conflicting info. One doctor does a saliva test because blood tests don't show your free ranges then another says "oh I don't believe in those I do the blood tests". Sometimes you just don't know where to turn and in the end you think why bother going to a doctor. We just need to keep sharing information. Like they said on the morning show, there is not enough information out in dealing with peri. Also they said we need to realize it's a natural phase your body goes through. I say if you can put a man on the moon how come you can't solve the misery of peri and menopause.

Bell,
It is so frustrating when doctors just do not understand!! So I empathize with your frustrations and it does not help when you are already stressed with the symptoms you are going thru.
I have heard as Molly and others said that really the hormone testing is not real reliable until you start missing periods for awhile. My gyn, has said that we know we are in peri by the fact of our age and when they test it can fluctuate so as our hormones do.
I have learned more from these boards than anything the doctor or gyn has told me. My regular doctor, a man, seems clueless about it, although he did suggest Estroven, an over the counter vitamin/herbal supplement to be the best right now. It did seem to help me for awhile and then not so much. But there again, my gyn said that if I was not having hot flashes (which I am not) it was not going to be as big a help. HE said that the Estoven PMS brand was useless, she says it is good for the type of PMS symptoms we have in Peri. SO my point in telling you this, is I really too get frustrated with all the conflicting views and the brush offs they sometimes give us all!!
I think reading as much as we can will help at this time to educate ourselves as to what to take. And also if we are not happy with our gyns or drs. then asking around to friends, etc. as to who they go to and who they like.
I know the anxiety is so hard to deal with , with all the symptoms and just know you are not alone.

jacqbu,
You mentioned a morning talk show that you saw and I don't know if it is the same one I saw recently but I was sure disappointed in the info. This woman doctor was on there and said she has devoted 5-10 years of her work to resarching peri and meno and all she seemed to come up with it seems is that there is not enough info about the subject yet!! I had taped the show thinking she would have some insights...and was sorely disappointed. As far as i am concerned if men went thru this they'd find something real quick to help out with all the symptoms!! LOL!!
she didn't have much to say except talk about hot flashes which as we all know are just one of the symptoms and not one that all of us even get. She did say as you mentioned that it is a natural phase and we will "get thru it" but you know when one is going thru it that is really not much of a consolation I thought as I watched her!! I almost wrote her name down to write her!!

I would be interested too in what your Naturopath has said. I have been looking inio one in our area. I would especially be interested in what they recommend for anxiety which is a big issue for most of us

You guys are the best!!!! If only the Dr.'s were half this supportive and helpful.
I did not even bother returning the phone call. I am not getting sucked into therapy with a Psychologist either. I studied it for 3 years in college and there is No way I am starting that.
As far as symptoms.... It started a year ago with racing HB. I went through a ton of test from Echo to EKG you name it I had it.
They checked my thyroid, Adrenal Glands..
I also had aniexty. I tell you what really makes you realize how bad Dr.'s are. Get your medical Records and read what they write about it. It's insulting.
Mine wrote "she seem's tearful over things of importance" who isn't! I have two small kids to care for. I found countless errors and I had allergic reactions to Meds. that weren't even noted in my chart!
I spent almost a year with bad aniexty and racing HB . They put me on Buspar and Inderal LA a beta blocker.
I then developed Terrible PMS, mood swings, crying spells, depression, hair loss, brown patches on face and trouble sleeping.
The latest has been periods getting closer which to my Dr. meant Fibroids!!!
I get cramps with NO period and brown discharge a week or so after my period. When I say cramps I mean Cramps!! The one that really sealed it for me.... facial hair! Also weight gain to weight loss.
I have been to 3 Dr.'s plus a Cardiologist who can't find a thing wrong so they ALL told me Aniexty. I beg to differ...

Hi all....
rmc12...a wonderful natural supplement for anxiety is passionflower it is referred to as Natures "valium" . I use it in a tea as well as pill form. Skullcap is another central nervous relaxant it helps with anxiety when one should be sleeping. Valerian, this one I don't use as the smell of it alone causes me anxiety...It's nasty. There are homeopathy remedys that work great to. Do a search on anxiety + homeopathy under the popular search engine and it will name quite a few. These you have to pick yourself as unlike herbs they are very specific to your personality as well as symptoms. My remedy is pulsatilla and acontium. The pulsatilla totally turned my years of insomnia right around.
Bell...I too used to have terrible pvc's (my life was consumed with them) as I think we talked about in another post. I used hawthorne berry (a natural beta blocker) , coenzyme q10, magnesium and a good quality b complex 50 mg. This was shocking to me as it worked so well I only suffer a few flutters now pre menstrually, and no longer use any of the supplements other than the b vits and magnesim. Don quoi is a wonderful herb for those going through meno or pre it helps balance hormones. I am sure you have heard of Black cohosh for hot flashes, this remedy does not work immediately and needs to be taken for at least 3 weeks consistently for benefits. Evening primrose ...I love this one...It also has natural hormonal qualities and really helps with breast pain and cramping. Again, it needs a couple of weeks to reap benefits.
Now saying all that.....You guys should read up on all of these before trying them as some have indications that should not be taken with other meds as they do the same thing as the traditional meds you have been prescribed by your allopathic doctors. Also you may have allergies to certain flowers or plants that would not allow these to be taken. These are the herbs I am referring to. As for the b vitamins and evening primrose you should be fine. All woman with anxiety should try a B comlex at least 50mg 2 x day. These do not work overnight either but in a month you should notice a huge difference they are our "stress vitamins " and play a huge role in our body for keeping it in line. Well let me know if you have any other symptoms, these are ones I have used or do use on a regular basis. I can always ask Kim (naturopath) if you have symptoms that I have not used supplements for. These are ones that I was advised to try and use... Like I said...read up on each one before you start to see if any of them have something that would not mix well with something you are already on. For instance...st johns wort and 5htp should not be taken by anyone on an anti-depressant as they both affect the part of the brain with the seritonin uptake and you can end up in trouble as you would be taking to much and basically it would be like doubling your meds....Well theres some reading for you......Lesley

Hi Bell,
If all your Echo, EKG tests, see a cardio, etc. came out normal, why are you on a beta blocker? That year you were having racing HB, was it all the time or was it just periodically? Many drs. are too eager to prescribe meds these days. When I going thru my peri symptoms, I had rapid HB or heart palps that would come/go - my dr. did all the tests - all came back normal - said I didn't have a history of heart problems - and that was that - then it went away, just like all the other peri symptoms. Keep in mind, Oprah went thru the same thing.
Here's something that happened to my sister when she went in to the hospital last year b/c of an infection and an hyst. She is extremely allergic to latex and it was noted on her records, on her tag around her wrist, on the board, everywhere but her forehead! Anyway, a nurse rinsed a towel wearing latex gloves and gave it to my sister to wash her face. The next thing, my sister's eyes and lip swelled up big-time. They panicked and quickly gave her Benadryl intravenously which caused her heart to go really fast - she end up in ICU. After being there for 2 days, she stablized, they wanted to put her on a beta blocker. She refused and told them she didn't have a heart condition and that it was a result of the high dosage of Bendadryl. She is extremely sensitive to meds and her reaction to it caused to her have the fast HB. The reason why I'm telling you this story is b/c the dr. was too eager to put her on beta blocker over this incident which they caused and if my sister wasn't one to challenge or question the dr., she would be on beta blocker. So, if I were you, ask the Cardio if you really need to be put on beta blocker. Sometimes it's the meds that is also not making you feel good too.
Oh, my dr. wanted me to "see someone" too but I told him no, that I didn't need to b/c I didn't have unresolved issues in my life. I told him I was just sick and tired of feeling so bad all the time.

Sometimes it's the meds that is also not making you feel good too.

 molly that is awful about your sister. Have you seen the show on Dr. Mishaps? This stuff happens all the time, so scary.
My HB was constant 121 bpm never slowing down. They had me hooked up to a EKG for hours and it never came down. Not only are the Beta Blockers to slow down the heart but they are suppose to help keep you calm? This remains to be seen IMO.

Hi Bell,
OK, if your HB was constant, then I guess you should be on the beta blockers. I thought it was just periodically. You could easily be having peri symptoms as well as a rapid HB condition. Sometimes I get to the point where I want to blame everything on meno but I know there are the possiblity of other things going too. My sister's HB was at 180! Guess that must have been really fast! Anyway, after she was out of ICU, she was fine and never had fast HB again.
Since you don't really care for your dr. and you found errors in your records, I think it's wise to find another. Why stay with someone that gets you pissed? Just thougth I say also that my sister worked in the med field so she can read med charts but she also found that some lazy nurse filled it out w/o ever asking even general questions, i.e., the chart said she 's married, living w/ her husband when she's been divorced for over 10 yrs, that she's 5'3" but she's 5'7"! And they have the nerve to check the box that said they discussed everything with her. Ended up my sistesr took the chart and filled it out herself! It is scary! Really have to be careful and on top of your health stuff! No, I haven't seen the show Dr. Mishaps...is it on cable? when? where?
Take care,
molly

Hi Molly. I don't remember what channel. Actually there are several, I even saw one on Oprah not too long ago.
It kills me on my chart it talks about how with each Pap they checked my thyroid size NEVER happened and even things like the breast exams it will say "I went over how to give a self breast exam with patient " NEVER happened. It is crimminal how bad it is. One of my charts said "Patient Refused a weight check" I have never in all my life refused a weight check.
I got my records from all my Dr. Last year and sat in horror reading them.
180 is high but I have heard of it being even higher on these boards Under Heart Conditions.
Every now and again I get strong Palps that I swear thump so loud I think I will fall over dead. I got one of those wrist monitors to check it. Average for me is between 75-85.

Hi Bell,
Wow! Now, this is really scary! I wouldn't call what they put on your chart "errors" anymore - it's falsifying records!! It is criminal! No difference than forgery! Makes you wonder what else goes on that we don't know about! Did you confront the dr. about this misinformation on you? What the heck is this world coming to!! Sometimes I wonder how people could live with themselves knowing what they do to others!
Your heart rate is normal if it's 75-85. Guess the meds are working for you. By the way, if the Buspar is making you tired, maybe take it in the evening?
Hang in there!!

I have to take Buspar twice a day 15 mg in morning and another 15 in the evening. I still have break through RHB though.
You can request a copy of your records, it's your right. I would recommend every women do this. Makes for interesting reading let me tell you!

hello there.. i just wanted to add a few things here..
I am 41 and i am dealing with ovarain failure. i am or will be fully menopausaul in a few months.. (hench one year no periods)
I have had two reactions here mmm\The gp and immunologist i was seeing told me.. oh it is menopause don't worry about it..patted me on the head and off i went .. GRH
the gyno had a really hard time believing that i am going through this BUT the blood work proved it..
But the first set of tests she did she thhought i was ovulating and so wheni still didn't have a period .. she gave me one and did a day three FSH test... This test will tell them exactly how your ovaries are functioning.. some women are entering ovarain failure and still getting periods.. so i don't understnad why a doctor would wait until you went three months without one.. But i have been having symptoms for 4 years and had to go three months without a period before they took me seriously... My estrogen levels are not that low.. so that test does no real good..
My point being .. if they do test your fsh level (this is the hormone that tests the function of your ovaries) it should be on day three.. I would ask for a referral to a gyno.. gp don't really know this stuff i swear..
They should test FSH LH and estrogen levels.
I got the OLD your depressed and worry about your health to much too... I was so pissed off at my gp i haven't been back since.. but now that i have this dx i will be going back..Because if you are in early menopause there is alot of health risks that you need to be aware of.. bone density etc.. so the gyno told me... it is so important to take care in this situ.. I had a freind that went throu meno at 35 and then the doctor didn't follow up and nOw at 42 she is dealing with osteoprosis..
You aren't too young and sounds like a new gp is in order.. good luck
