New here and wanted to get other opinions about protein shakes. I read on another message board that doing cardio workouts in the morning on an empty stomach, then having a protein shake for breakfast is supposed to help with weight loss. Is this correct? If so, where could I get these shakes?

Another question, off topic of protein shakes. I lost 9 pounds this last month, but only .3% body fat. Yes, .3! I don't get it! What am I doing wrong?

I started HIIT this morning, with 1-2 minute intervals of sprints, total workout of about 25-30 minutes (jogging in between), 3 times a week. I'm only able to do 4 or 5 sprinting intervals because I'm not in very good shape. For another 2-3 times a week, I'll do my DDR2 Max (Dance Dance Revolution) game (it has a workout session). Maybe my problem is not enough muscle strengthening? I am not consistent because I have to break up my workouts, cardio in the morning and strengthening in the evenings. Sometimes I'm so tired at night that I just skip the strengthening.

Any input on the protein shakes and/or workout tips would be appreciated!

I've also heard that whey protien shakes are great for high-protein diets and weight loss. I'd like to know which one is the best and where I can get them.

I can't remember the brand but i'm sure its the only one they have but Costco has protein drinks that are in huge tubs for around $20 each. They have two flavors, Vanilla and Bavarian Chocolate (which is what i have now, not bad, just add a banana). It does help, i've lost about 10 lbs so far.

You can get protein at any grocery store or Target. I like soy protein (I get Genisoy brand) personally...I know there are different kinds, but I don't really know the difference. It's very filling and the chocolate flavor tastes good mixed with plain milk. And as Trenton mentions, banana is amazing with any protein...it completely covers up the protein flavor!

Spiru-tein makes an EXCELLENT one! They come in like 7-10 different tastes, but my favorite is cookies and cream. YOu mix the powder (not in a blender) with skin milk. It is yummy and filling.

Also, a good thing about this brand is that they have sampler packs so that you can find the ones you like without having to buy the big canisters.

I live in Texas and get mine at The Vitamin Shoppe.

I think an aerobic workout before breakfast is an EXTREMELY good way to encourage the buring of fat; your entire workout will be fueled by stored glycogen and stored fat!
No, there's NO bodyfat test that can measure anywhere close to even a plus or minus a percent or two, much less to .3% That number really has ZERO meaning in fact. Relax, a decent portion of the 9 pounds was fat. Remember an error of 2% bodyfat can be 4 POUNDS for a 200 pounder and that's with the BEST testing method (like underwater weighing!)
It is important to remember all techniques currently used are estimates, and are prone to error. BIA and skinfold measurements have a standard error of about 3%. Therefore, if results of an analysis indicate you have 17% body fat, your body fat ranges between 14 and 20%. There's even a small chance the error range may be greater than 3%. Even underwater weighing has a standard error of 2%. Body composition measurement is not an exact science.

I was once tested with an infared tester at my gym and I got a wonderful 18%...next day the same trainer who didn't remember me because he did so many tests rated me at 26% with the same tester.
So much for BODYFAT testers!

I think home-made shakes blending protein powder and things like cocoa, egg, vanilla, xanthan (to thicken like a McDonald's shake), with skim milk and ice cubes and some artificial sweetner of your choice can be really great.
Use your imagination and concoct one that is delicious for you. Banana is nice!:D
A GREAT deal cheaper than the precanned concoctions...and tastier too.

I'm just wonder when the best time to have the protein shake is before or after a workout. Thanks
