View Full Version : Scaphoid bone non union

I broke my scaphoid two years ago and had surgery. The dr. put a screw in it, casted me for a few months, therapy, and i was home free. Three months ago, i had another surgery because of a non-union. it merely fell apart and grew a nasty cyst. The cyst was removed along with a vascularized bone graft and two pins. the pins are out now and its still not gonna heal all the way. So I will have to take what i can get because any wrist surgeon will probably know that these bones are famous for not healing.

Last summer i took up weight lifting and really got into heavy lifting big time. Thats one factor to why it could have been destroyed. other factors include diet of candy, alcohol, lack of sleep, VERY poor nutrition, lots of cigarettes and marijuana. This all ended completely in january. April is when we had it x rayed and got the bad news.

I am now completely reborn, get a great diet, all nutrients, vitamins, and minerals neccessary for an athlete to stay healthy, plenty of good night sleep, exercise, and no drugs or alcohol. no cigarettes or anything.

Its obvious that the drugs and poor nutrition didnt help it, but could the heavy lifting have ruined it? I lifted extremely heavy free weights and felt considerable pain in my wrist after a while and will never lift heavy weights again. However, I plan on doing my conditioning with pushups, pullups, and regular calisthenic body resistance. Will that be a potential risk for my wrist? I know it wont be as risky as heavy weights, but will it still be a bad idea? I intend on wearing athletic tape for the pushups and using handles since i wont be able to bend my wrist for conventional pushups. Any input/opinions are appreciated. thankyou

Good for you... better diet, healthier life-style. Congrats.

You may want to consider a wrist strap or lifting gloves, this option should allow you to continue with the good exericse program, but avoid any additional problems with your wrist.
