View Full Version : Would like ANY Information regarding High Platelets

I am new to this board. Last week I had my yearly exam at my PCP's office. They did blood work on me, which is not uncommon. The nurse called me and said that my platelets were elevated but the Physicians Assistant that I saw said that she was not worried about it at this time. What does that mean? I started looking for causes of High platelets on the internet and could not find even one optimistic thing. I am hoping to get some information from this board to help me understand concerns for high platelets since I know absolutely nothing about them. At this point from the things I have read, I feel that my doctors office is holding back on me. It wasn't until I called them back asking questions that they even requested that I come back in a month to be re-tested. And that was only if I wanted to. It wasn't there request. My platelets were 548,000. The nurse said they have never been elevated before. From the reading I have done I might have similar symptoms to others on this sight. Should I quit worrying? Or should I seek a second opinion?

Any comments or questions to help me understand would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Teresa,
Sorry I can't be of much help to you, because like you I also don't know much about high platelets, except what I have read on here. Last year my Gynecoligist sent me to a hematologist after finding out my platelets were in the 700,000 range... The hematologist doesn't seem too concerned and has me on no meds as of yet, (maybe because I have no symptoms?)
I will be seeing him again in June. I worry also because it seems most people here with high platelets are on some type of med. I hope to find out a lot more on my next appointment in June.

Thank for your reply Cassie. The other thing I have noticed from the reading I have been doing on this site and others is that everyone has been sent to a hemotologist. It doesn't sound like my doctor is even considering that. The only thing I can even remotely think of is that they might be waiting on the results for the rest fof my lab work to come back. Were there other elevations in your blood work that helped your doctor deciding to send you to a hemotologist????

i'm not sure , sometimes you're body could be fighting something and you dont even know
also i know alchohol raises your platelet count too
when i would go to the hemotologist after a weekend that i was at a wedding or something i was always about a 100 or so higher than usual and i dont mean drunk , cause i dont drink but even just a glass of whine or so
like i said i wouldnt worry , unless it came back elevated next visit
i hope you find what your looking for
