I would get a hairstylists opinion. Don't try and do it yourself. You could fry your hair or like you said, it could fall out! Try and find a styler that knows what he/she is doing.

I would definitely go to a qualified hairstylist. Ask friends or family if they recommend anybody, because not all hairdressers will do a good job with turning somebody's dark hair, light. A couple of years ago, I wanted to turn my naturally dark brown hair a golden blonde. My mom and I had streaked our hair blonde at home with one of those kits, so I figured doing my whole head wouldn't be much different--WRONG! My hair turned out an awful shade--it was a mix between orange and a light brown.... So I dyed it a light brown hoping it would make it a nicer color (I later found out that I shouldn't of used that brand on bleach, it has something to do with the ingredients--it was Clairol's Herbal Essences). It was at least a bit presentable, until I was able to give my hair a rest (about 2 weeks), and got to a hairdresser, whom I had never been to before. She said she did all she could without making my hair fall right out, from over processing it, but it ended up turning out yellow. And not a very nice shade, at that. So, the moral of the story is, go to somebody who is qualified to do such a drastic job on your hair, unless you want a lot of stress and a big headache. Sorry for the long post!!
