Hello,
I was wondering what the odds are of a man with CF having children without help from doctors?
My brother has CF and his ex just told him they have a child. He doesnt think the baby is his because he thought Cf men were sterile.
I am thrilled that I may have a nephew, but now I am not so sure that I really do, and was wondering if this can happen?
Thank you.

I know the odds are against it but I know of a male w/ CF who has a son conceived naturally. I do not know his genotype.

It's my understanding that the vast majority of cf men do not have a connected vas deferens. In fact an aquaintenance of mine who was diagnosed at the age of 30 tell the story of an ex who tried to tell him he was a father and he knew it was impossible. So it's very improbable, but not impossible. I know of male CFers who have had this check to see if they need to use protection or not.

Its possible to have kids as a male but VERY UNLIKELY.
Have him go do a sperm test if he is concerned and that will tell him what he needs to know :)

hi,
Just thought i'd make a comment. What i've been told is that 98% of males with cf are infertile. They produce sperm prefectly like any other person but the vas deferns that carries the sperm to the seamen is either blocked or never formed when in the womb.
A simple way to see if your in the 98% is to have a sperm test done. My bf recently had it done and not to our surprise is came back that there wasn't a single sperm there. Now this doesn't mean to say that you can never father a child it just means you can't do it naturally but through IVF or IUI you can have a child so there is some hope.
Hope it helped.

Having double deltaf508 causes sterility. The deltaf508 is the most common gene it tinds to cause male infertility and can cause carriers of it to have fertility problems. However no not every man w/cf is unable to cause pregnancy naturally. My sons both have double deltaf508 and the doctors said they had a 0.05 chance of being able to father the old fashion way. Also it has to do with the severity of the persons cf because the vas deferans get blocked when it is bad or they don't have them. So a man with a mild case could very well father a child.

Hi, i'm 42 and I have CF , i also have 4 children and i'm very lucky I know the only way we can figure is that every time my wife became impregnated was right after i had been in the hospial or had taken a lot of antibiotic's , as I had a sperm count done and they said it was impossable to father children . I guess i fooled them . and yes they are mine.
