View Full Version : Can allergy meds just quit working?

I have been on Allegra D for a while now off and on, and before whenever I would think it wasn't a "change of season" time of year and go off of it (that one was prescribed mostly for my seasonal allergies), I would end up feeling horrible, but last time that happened (in February), my doctor told me to take it twice daily until July or August. So I have been doing that along with Flonase daily as directed. And for the most part, that has worked well.
However, last week, I started getting the fatigue and headachiness and napping after work, which usually indicates that my allergies are about to hit full force. Sure enough last weekend, I got the stuffiness, headachiness, congestion (so much that I wake up several times during the night when I finally get to sleep because I am so stopped up), my stomach feels all weird because of all the congestion, left ear hurts, and sore throat and coughing. The thing that is so frustrating is that before anytime I was like this it was when I had quit the medication. So I'm not sure if this season is just that bad even on the meds or if the Allegra maybe isn't working for me anymore.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thanks.

Yes, a common problem with antihistimines and decongestants is that they can "quit working" in some people.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I went to my doctor this afternoon and she's added Singulair to see if that helps. If not, then she wants me to set up another appointment to determine where to go from here.

I don't think it is so much that the medicine quits working or that you've developed a tolerence, but that your allergies get worse and overwhelm your system and the medicine is no longer enough to keep symptoms away. I feel that is what happened to me. I ended up needing allergy shots.

Yeah, mine have gotten a lot worse the past two years. They've always been bad, but through high school, I used Hisminal (sp?) which worked great for me, but then it got taken off the market.
It's very frustrating to have so many allergy problems, especially trying to work when you're in an allergy induced headachy, stopped up, miserable fog. I considered the allergy shots, but I am really hoping this works because my insurance I believe counts each visit as a doctor's appointment so it would be a $40 some co-pay each week for however long you have to get them. Yikes!I have a real bad feeling, though, that they are getting worse and that I will end up having to bite the bullet and get the shots eventually.
Thanks for the reply.

most places don't charge you for the visit just the shots.

Normally they charge you (or the ins co) for the vial (or vials) or serum and then just a fee for the injections...not an office visit. My two vials were about $120 and then the injections were $19....tough when my insurance has a $200 cap on allergy.
