My husband smashed his middle finger at work today really bad. He cannot bend his finger passed the middle joint and the tip is swelled up purple and is very cold. I'm worried because it is cold, doesn't that mean there is no circulation? He don't want to go and get it checked out (he's stubborn) but I really think he needs too. It being so cold is what is scaring me. Do you guys think he should go or am I just being paranoid?

most likely blood under the nail.

Well, we ended up going to ER last night and we found out he had crushed the bones in the tip of his finger. There was not much they could do for the fracture due to it's location but put it in a splint for 2-4 weeks.

Yes there is not much to do for this type of fracture (called a Tufts fracture) except splint, but it is better that he got it checked- a break that goes through the joint, or a break with displaced bone fragments might have required surgery for proper healing. He should do fine once the bone heals but it is not uncommon to have some persistant tenderness at the fingertip for quite a while after the bone heals.
