What migraine preventative do you use? Does it work? What are the side effects? Currently I am taking Topamax but it's so expensive.

A Migraine specialist recommended a herbal suppliment called Migralief (sp?) - (not to be confused with a prescription drug called Migraleive on sale in the UK)
He said the herbal suppliment helps to prevent migraines happening in the first place. I haven't tried it as I only get migraine about once or twice a year.

Our daughter is on topamax for migraines but it quit working so our GP added Nortriptaline (anti-depressant) and she has only had 2 migraines since. I believe the 2 migraines were from her eating toooooooooo much chocolate.
The nortriptaline is an old way they use to deal with migraines. Seems to work. I know its alot cheaper for us to buy.

Hannasnana ~ What dose of the Topamax is your Daughter on now? How about the Nortriptyline? I'm on the same combo and am trying to find the right doses for me. Just curious of her combo. Thanks.

I've had headaches for 20 some years ,I always thought they were sinus until I was diagnosed with Graves disease . My Dr. told me to let my family Dr. know he thought they were migraines and she immediatly prescribed Imitrex , they take my headache away within 20 minutes !!! :) :) undefined

I just started taking Zonegran last night. Boy did I have a bad night. I didn't sleep well at all. I kept waking up to stupid dreams that made no sense. Drove me nuts. I kept having to go to the bathroom too. Since I was awake anyway though.. lol. Today I feel a bit woozy but it's starting to fade finally. So far just a slight headache, nothing I can't handle. I also take Relpax or Zomig..Compazine for nausea. The Relpax is like Zomig, my doctor gave me samples to try out. They seem to work fine. I am hoping the Zonegran does the trick. Nothing else ever has. I have my fingers crossed.
Take care and have a pain free day.

I can head mine off with aspirin free Excedrin for tension headaches if I take it just as I first notice it otherwise I need Imitrex.

After suffering for the last 5 years with migraine headaches 3-4 times a week, and after trying mega doses of riboflavin, massage therapy, diet changes, lots of water to ward off dehydration which sometimes causes migraines, large doses of calcium, etc., I finally went the medication route and am now on propranolol. It is a beta blocker and is used to treat high blood pressure, and it has changed my life. I rarely get a headache, and if I do, I take one ibuprofen and am fine for the rest of the day, whereas before I took at least 3 at a time for minimal relief. I can be totally busy and stressed out and still not have a headache. I take 40mg twice a day. I started out with 20mg twice a day, and that almost worked, so the doctor upped it to 40mg 3 times a day and that was too much--it lowered my blood pressure too much. This present dosage now seems to be about right for me, although on occasion I feel light-headed, so only take 1/2 a tablet, and that seems to be fine. Another side-effect I have is slightly looser stools. But this isn't a big issue. I have been on it for 4 months, and will go to the doctor next month just to make sure all is well. But I would sure hate to give it up! I am not a big user of medication, and hope to be able to discontinue it at some point, which is apparently possible since I am menopausal and the headache thing seems to be hormone related. I think the main thing is to keep in touch with your physician, and try different things until you hit on the right one. Best Wishes.

I have found that not all migraines are Nerological. I have trouble with a crushed nerve in my spine in my neck region. I see a massage therapist once a week. As well as using a heating pad for a half an hour, then massage, then ice. I also take a natural muscle relaxant called Formula 303. You can not get addicted to that.
Also try seeing a chiroprator. It works. Try reading Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul. Good Luck.

Hi Liane,
Do you think your migraines are from stress? Maybe stored stress? Have you tried bio-feedback? I'll have to ask our Dr. about a beta blocker for a teenager. The topamax is making my daughter feel horrible everyday. Right now its the only medication that works for her.

I have not tried bio-feedback, and I'm sure the headaches are stress-related, although right now they seem to be hormonal. It is a good idea as you have suggested to check with the doctor, especially when dealing with teenagers. My own daughter seems to have outgrown the migraines from her teenage years, which were stress and hormone related. Hope all goes well with you.
