View Full Version : Daughter's test results are back

Her "sweat conductivity screen" was 33 (reference range was: <60).

She had a few other labs come back abnormal but the doctor isn't requesting a follow-up. He just wants to "keep an eye on" her low blood sugar levels. I told him I'd rather test her at home than bring her in once a week. I bought a monitor today and they want me to do it everyday (makes me wonder why they were only going to do it once a week  ).

Maybe someone here can give some insight to these labs:

Glucose: 57 (low) Range: 65-99 (this is the fasting range but she wasn't fasting)

creatinine: .3 (low) Range: .5-1.2
BUN/creatinine ratio: 37 (high) Range: 6-25
Carbon Dioxide: 19 (low) Range: 21-33
AST: 36 (high) Range: 2-35
MCV: 86.8 (high) Range: 70-86

Most of them are only slightly out of range but I assume the limits are there for a purpose and anything over or above warrants concern (which my doctor has a huge lack of  ).

I'm making an appointment with a pediatrician and taking the lab results with me. She has too many abnormal things going on for me to dismiss these test results as insignificant. Had the doctor examined her at all or even inquired as to her condition he may have been able make some connections.

I'm requesting further testing for celiac disease (our current doctor didn't do ANY antibody screening for this) and diabetes insipidus.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and encouraging words as we walk through this. I'm determined to find answers that will help my daughter.

Love and Prayers, Kelly

Well, I've been researching the sweat conductivity screen that my daughter had done and I'm confused. I had requested a "sweat chloride" test. Is one more accurate than the other? Should I have them do the sweat chloride?

I don't understand why the doctor ordered the conductivity test as opposed to the chloride test.

UGH!! This is all so complicated! I wish they could just do everything at once rather than having to keep going back. Oh well, we can only go forward.

I'm considering taking her to urgent care to see if they could give me some insights about her tests and possibly a referral to the appropriate specialists. They could at least do a chest x-ray and check her pulse-oximeter reading.

If anyone can give me some info about the conductivity vs. chloride testing I'd appreciate it!

Love and Prayers, Kelly

I can't help you with the sweat test stuff, sounds like it's the same thing -- They just told us they were going to do a sweat test on DS with the little conductors underneath the sweatbands and DS's results were normal.

I would ask for a referral to a peds pulmonologist and gastro specialist to figure out what is going on with your poor little girl Something isn't quite right. IS there a children's hospital close by?

I would recommend that no one trust the sweat test result UNLESS the test is done by a CFF accredited facility. Our local hospital administers the sweat test but they did it INCORRECTLY on my daughter and we were then advised to take her to a CFF accredited facility where she took the test twice, both times positive for CF. The folks at the CFF accredited facilities are trained by the CFF in exactly how this test is to be administered.

It looks like they did a kidney function test on your daughter, I would take her to a pediatrician and let them review her results. The carbon dioxide is low and that is usually form breathing to fast or dehydration can even mess with the levels. There are two different sweat test that I know of one is just a screening and the other is suppose to be 99.9 % accurate. My son had the screening test first it is done much like a sweat chloride test, then we had the sweat chloride test this is the one our pulm says is 99.9 % accurate. Don't ever dought yourself keep pushing........ and go forward with a new doc who will take you seriously. best of luck
