i recently found a lump in breast. i am a young healthy female.( i am overweight but i have been excersising and losing weight recently, my blood pressure is back at a normal level and overall my physical fitness has improved 10fold) i am going to the doctor tomorrow to get checked out. i am really freaked out by finding a lump. i have done monthly breast exams for a couple of years and never found anything abnormal. i want to know what it is as soon as possible. if the doctor tells me to wait it out a couple of months should i listen or insist on further testing? i've also read that mammograms are often inconclusive or don't show lumps in young women because breast tissue is denser...is this generally true? should i get an ultrasound and a mammogram? are there any other important questions i should ask?

I was given an ultrasound for that reason as well as the fact that I have pimples for boobs (thank goodness Hubby is a legs man!). The ultrasound is a screening tool in a similar way to a pap. No conclusive diagnosis can be made from that, just an indication. It can show whether the mass is fluid filled or tissue. Then a biopsy can be taken (a fine needle aspiration, or tissue removed). This is where I get foggy as I never got the biopsy done (shame on me). I have heard that fine needle aspirations can give false negatives sometimes, so you need to find out about that.
I can tell you that my condition ended up most likely (not conclusively due to no biopsy), a fibroadenoma, a very common tissue mass (benign tumour) particularly found in women in their 20's and 30's. These are lumps that are movable, some are painful some like mine are not. They can change with your cycle, stress, excercise etc. Malignant tumours tend to be immovable, not painful (until late stages), do not change size, location, with your cycle etc. They often accompany changes in skin colour and texture and nipple discharge.
Hope this gives you some info. All your efforts to improve your level of health are the best thing you can do. Tomatoes contain anti-cancer agents, essaics tea, maitake mushrooms, and staying away from processed food. Cancer websites should be able to give you a list of the right foods to eat to help this. Evening primrose oil is good for benign lumps (don't know the effect on malignant ones). Anyway, good luck with your condition, and with your weight loss (good for you!!!). Keep us posted with your results.
