After I had my first daughter i got carpal tunnel, I had the surgery on both of my hands. They felt better for awhile then the pain started again. After I got pregnant again last year it went away. My daughter was born november 2000 and as of february it is now back. I also started using my birth control pills again. I was told by my doctor that it is not related. Anyone else have this happen to them? any suggestions? I think it may be related to my hormones.......someone suggested my prenatal vitamins may have been helping. HELP!

Carpal tunnel is one of the symptoms of an imbalanced thyroid which often gets imbalanced during and after pregnancy. Yes it's a hormone thing. Have your thyroid checked. Is there anyone in your family being treated for thyroid? You can find out more information on thyroid on the thyroid board and at Mary Shomans thyroid site on about.com. Vitamins can help if you are low on them. I found minerals most helpful. You may want to change Dr.s if he doesn't think it is related. There is a TOP DOC list on Mary Shomans site.

Carol,

I had carpal tunnel in both of my hands when I was pregnant with my son almost 9 years ago. After I had him, it went away. It wasn't until 2 1/2 years ago after my daughter was born that it came back. When I would vacuum, sweep, mop, stir anything, crochet, or just shampoo my hair, my hands would go numb and ache. At night was the worst. I couldn't sleep for the pain. For reasons totally unrelated to the carpal tunnel, I went on a low-carb diet. You will read all of the stuff about how your aches and pains will go away. Much to my surprise, within 3 days of cutting out carbs (potatoes, bread, pasta, corn, carrots, flour products, sugar) my hands quit hurting. Honest to God, they did. I also had a small spot in my lower back, a muscle, that hurt a lot too. It quit hurting after 3-4 days too. I got off track and started eating carb rich food again back at Christmas time (imagine that) and have not gone for more than a week or two at a time without eating them. Within a week after going back on the carbs, my hands start to hurt, but honestly, they don't hurt anywhere near as bad as they did before. When they start to hurt, I cut out the carbs again. They still swell a lot, but they don't go numb and they don't keep my up at night crying with pain like they used to. I am sure that going for even a week at a time without carbs is what has kept mine under control. I definately don't believe everything that I read and I know that people think I am nuts when I tell them this story, but my aches and pains were gone within days. Honestly. Even a week without carbs and 2-3 with carbs has made a huge difference in mine. I also believe that it is hormone related because the low carb diet has made my periods regular and my mood swings decrease significantly. I just tried it to lose some weight after having my baby, and was very surprised with the 'fringe benefits' of it. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif If you decide to try it, let me know if it helped you. Good Luck to you!!
