hey- i just wanted to ask, how do i know i'm not in danger of overdosing on calcium and other vitamins? i take a multi vitamin every day (flinstones chewables haha) and 1-2 calcium chews (1 chew has 30-50% of my calcium needs and 50% vitamin D.) apart from that, i eat pretty healthily and have a nutrition bar every day which also has 100% of some vitamins just like my multivitamin tablet. should i just get the list of the vitamins you can take too much of, as well as find out how much calcium i need, and add up approximately how much i'm getting from all the vitamins and food intake? the side effects of too much calcium sound nasty and i want to be safe. thanks!

You could take 5x most multivitamins and never get close to over dosing. The recommended doses are minimum, not maximums. For instance vitamin D is often quoted as 200 IU/day and may cite 400IU as an absolute maxium. But a single day in the sun sitting in your bathing suit and your skin will make 10,000 IU, a factor of 50x more. Recent research puts the toxic level at 40,000 IU/day but only if you take that for months. The elderly and babies are sometimes given shots of vitamin D of 100,000 to 300,000 IU.

The truth is: very little research has been done on vitamin doses and most recommended levels are not based on real research but ultra conservative guesses.

If you are really taking the flintstone vitamins and it says 100% daily vitamin intake I am sure you know this is based on a childs weight and not an adults. You could do a search on Vitamin RDA and it would give you the minimal daily requirement of all vitamins.

Also.. how much Calcium a woman needs is based on age, weight, height and whether or not she is menopausal or not. Talk to your doctor if you aren't sure. But if you are feeling healthy you are probably one the right track.

Read the back of the vitamin bottle and see what percentage you are getting with one dose. If you are an adult, I don't think a children's vitamin is the the best suitable vitamin for you.

I also take a One-A-Day Vitamin each morning. This dose only gives me 30% of my needed calcium, so I also take a Caltrate 600 Plus each morning.
