I have numbing and tingling in both hands, particularly at night. This has been happening in my left hand for about six months, in my right hand for several weeks. From what I read, this sounds like CT, although I haven't read anything that talks about it happening in both hands.
Then, this weekend, both hands got itchy, then very swollen, then extremely tender and sore. I could hardly bend my fingers! I took tons of Advil and got through the weekend. After about three days, most of the swelling is gone, but they're still tender and numb.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I would have thought I could have CT in one hand, but both? And what's with the swelling?

WOW wierd stuff. If your carpal tunnel is a symptom of something else (thyroid for instance) then you could have it in both hands. Check my message below under "non-evasive treatment" for a therapy that works for carpal tunnel.
Mine was from thyroid problems and now they are being looked after the swelling has gone down. Tender and sore??? Don't know about that unless you were doing something heavy with them you don't usually do.

I have CT in both hands and also had the surgery on both. Tingeling and numbness were a BIG part of it,plus falling asleep feeling when I would push my daughters stroller. Some swelling but only to the point of not being able to wear my rings sometimes. I would have it checked out, plus the thyroid because I still want to do that myself, havent had the time.Good luck!

It's certain possible to have CT in both hands. I did, with classic symptoms of numbness in three and half fingers of each. Surgery on both hands (about six weeks apart) fixed it.
I was told that doing nothing could lead to permanent nerve damage, so putting off investigation of the problem is a bad idea.
In my right hand I have an unatrophied medial artery, which means there's less space than usual. I didn't check, but it seems likely that I'd be the same in the left hand, which would explain why I should have had CT in both.
Surgery has left me with two almost invisible scars, and a slight reduction in grip strength, though not enough to bother me.

I suffer from thyroid problems and had surgery for CTS. The swelling in your hands is of concern. If you are in constant pain, the could be CTS with another condition known as RSD. Get yourself checked. Also VIOXX or Celebrax can help, stay off the Advil (it will cause internal bleeding).

Hi,
I agree with the majority...........find a good dr. and insist on having some tests run! I now have the itchiness, swelling, and severe numbness among other things. I've had sporadic problems with CTS but nothing as bad as now. I had a thryroid test done too, but that was o.k. I pushed for more tests (I was having alot of other symptoms too that I finally started thinking might be connected.) Anyway, I ended up with alot of new dxs. All autoimmune diseases.......several affect the hands, so I don't know which is causing what.
Good luck, Ann

the swelling indicates more of a venus problem, it could also be a lymphatic problem. You very well may have carpell tunnel, but swelling is not one of the symptoms. One of your major veins from your hand/arm could be compressed somewhere along the way. I suggest you seek out other forms of treatment before you go looking for a surgen. Anybody trained in myofascial realse, registered massage therapists, physiotherapist can help allieviate the problems before they get any worse. A good massage thearpist or physiotherapist can do some simple tests to check to see if if it's a muscular/tissue problem, or a more systemic problem.

I had carpal tunnel as a result of an auto accident in 1998. In Feb. 1999 I had the release done on the right and in March 1999 the left hand was done. I did have a problem with swelling, tingling, and numbness. My CTS got so bad that I had absolutely no grip and couldn't pick up my granddaughter because of no strength.
The release seemed to solve the problem until last October and I was diagnosed a month ago with recurrent CTS. Sometimes the return of CTS can be caused by other health problems and in my case---fibromyalgia.
I have an appointment to see a hand specialist in two weeks. I have already decided that I will not have the release done again until the CTS gets so bad that I can no longer stand it. The reasoning behind this is that fibromyalgia will use frequently attack the area of the body that has had the most recent trauma to it.
Go ahead and have the release done if you really have this problem. I know alot of people who have had no further problems with CTS after the surgery.
Good Luck.

I concur with everyone within, sounds like the begining of "CTS" symptoms. But you need to seek medical treatment to start testing for different diseases ie... CTS,TOS,RSD,RA etc. CTS can happen to "Both Wrist," at the same time, even if you are Left/Right Hand dominate. It did in my case, but to be able to rest easy you need to act now not later by seeing your medical provider {for recording your symptoms/run test/lab- workup}. Don't take no for an answer, ask your family/internal medical doctor {if they are unsure of the problem}to refer you to a Ortho/Neuro specialist. Sometimes, they don't want to do it became of cost...{MAKE THEM START} that's why you have a co-pay, and coverage. Hope it isn't CTS or any of the others. Good Luck!

Its very possible to have cts in both hands. I had severe cts in both hands and had the surgery done. Now three years later I am still in pain. I got tested again and the result........severe carpal tunnel.
The doctor says there may be scar tissue inside. I think Im going to have the surgery again. I see a specialist on Monday.
Good Luck!
