Awhile bach I was on line and was Imed by someone I didnt know.I went ahead and talked to this girl.She said she was 10 and added me cause she was looking 4 her Mom and my screen name was simmlar to hers.I was carefull and just talked to this girl like I would my own kids(i have 3 girls of my own).I have talked to her off and on for a few months.
Today she Ims me and calls me a pervert and other nasty names.Says I am the one who Imed her and she is turning me in to the police.I didnt do anything wrong at all but talk to this girl.I makes me so mad cause 4 all I know I wasnt really talking to a young lost little girl.

Very odd situation indeed! Do you still have all the logs of your messages?

no I don't.If she does I aint worried really Its just scarry that you cant trust people online when you talk to them.She did give me her phone number and I have that but never planned on using it.

I know I am stupid but if you would have heard her story she told me some of you all would have probablly talked to her also.She was so sad and depressed or thats the story I got and being a mother of 3 girls I thought I could help this girl.I guess I lesrned a very big lesson

Have you thought that possibly she was the age she said in the predicament she said, but someone else took over that day disquises as her because they were possibly horrified she was chatting about this w/ someone on-line?

That was my first thought .There was one day I was talking to her she said her Grandmother was sitting there with her and said her grandmother didn't care if we chatted.I even told the girl if it was one of my girls I would be upset unless I was montering it all .

It could have been I dont know.I just know I learned not to just talk to anybody online.

Good lessen to learn. I used to go to those chat sites and instant message w/ people I didn't know, but it was just too spooky cause yo never ever know who you're really conversing with. And even if they are really who they claim you can never be to sure which makes the whole thing just not worth it!

I don't mean this to be nasty but I don't talk to anyone under the age of 21 on IM...it's just too dangerous these days. I can understand why you talked to her though because I've talked to other young people (when I first started using IM) and my heart went out to them with some of the stuff that they told me was going on with them. The problem is that you don't ever really know who you're talking with and sometimes (even though they said they were one age) were either adults lying and saying they were kids or kids lying and saying they were adults. It's a very sticky situation that you can get yourself into these days. If I'm talking to someone that I have a funny feeling about, I tend to save the logs or cut and paste and send it to my sisters email so she can print it out...just incase something happens. I do hope that they were just messing around with you though about going to the police. I'd hate for you to get in trouble for helping the girl. And even though you may feel bad about the situation, we all know you had her best interest at heart and that you were just being kind and trying to help. So try not to feel too bad about the situation. :nono:

How do you know a person is 21 or older though? Is there some sort way to block those who register as under 21?

I outright ask how old they are and I've actually told a lot of people that I can't talk to them because they're underage. Some of them don't like it and some of them understand. Everyone always tells me that I can read people pretty well...not sure if that's true or not...so I try to ask questions about their interests and things like that to get a feel of what type of person that they are. My sister uses my messenger sometimes too (she's 32) and some guy told her that he was 30 and she said that she started having a conversation with him and said there's no way you're 30 and he admitted that he was only 16. Sometimes you can tell and sometimes you can't. You just have to talk to them and weed them out. That's why I always put in my profiles for my IM's that if the conversation isn't going to be clean then don't bother talking to me because I don't want anyone knocking on my door accusing me of talking explicitly with a minor. :nono:

Please contact your ISP and see whether they can find the logs of your messages. If not, perhaps a computer expert can find them embedded somewhere in your computer. (You'd be surprised how long lots of things stay on hard drives.) Also, contact an attorney. Protect yourself immediately: you definitely do not want to leave yourself open to trouble.
