View Full Version : EGD tale- H. Pylori (negative)

Hello to all

I had my EGD done Friday. I was given 9 mg versed (two mg is a "normal" dose for an EGD, plus 200mg of demerol. Apparently I react differently to versed and was, to put it mildly, a wild woman. My husband said that when they brought me out to the recovery area I was screaming at them, "This is a shady operation you have going on here!" I don't remember it, thankfully. :)

Anyway, I was told by my husband that they checked for H. Pylori bacteria by snipping a piece of my stomach tissue to send for a biopsy. (I'm a nurse at the hospital where my EGD was done, so I check the results- negative). Has anyone been checked for H. pylori? Husband said it was due to "patchy irritation in my stomach" that he checked. I also had my esophagus dilated to 54fr. Why? I don't know.

Well, when I went to bed Friday night, I woke up nauseated and threw up a small amount of blood and yellow bile. I did take all of my meds as normal on Friday. All day saturday I've had a dull ache in my stomach, and a raw feeling in my throat. I keep worrying that I am bleeding inside from that biopsy... (Ahhhhh... and anxiety makes things feel worse!!) :nono:

Just wondering if anyone else has been checked for h. pylori. Also, I wasn't given a follow-up appointment!!! Agh! I asked my husband, "well... what do I do now???" I'm taking 40mg prilosec twice daily, 300mg zantac twice daily, and pepto bismol with terrible symptoms of GERD still.

Hmmm... thanks for letting me vent!

Jen, your story is very strange. To check for H-Pylori they just need to do a blood test. I had an ulcer back in 99 and a blood test confirmed I was H-Pylori positive. A few different kinds of anitbiotics, taken together for a couple days got rid of the ulcer.
In January of this year I was convinced my ulcer was back but in order to check if I had an H-Pylori ulcer again they made me do a breath test. I blew into a balloon and they checked that way. They could not do a blood test again because I will always score a postive result. Once you get H-Pylori it stays with you forever. I was negitive with the breath test, so no ulcer but was told I have GERD. I am using alternative methods to control it.... no more medication.
Hope that helps.
