Nutshell 04-11-2005, 06:11 PM I am so scared. I am 24 yrs old with a 2 yr old some and 3 month old daughter. I am going in for surgery on the 19th for a complete hyster. I have had major complications the past 6 years. My doc would have done this sooner had it not been for me trying to have children. Now that I have my children he is going to go ahead and take everything. I have PCOS and endo. We have tried every other treatment imaginable with no success. I am terrified of this surgery but am also tired of hurting all the time. What should I expect with this? I know I will have to take hormones but I am so scared it will completely change who I am. Is there anything I should know about?
kerry1 04-11-2005, 09:43 PM Is there a reason you have to have a complete hysterectomy?? Can't they leave one or two ovaries in?? Usually they try to keep the ovaries if they can, since they produce so many hormones and prevent you from having to take HRT. Have you gotten a second opinion?
Nutshell 04-12-2005, 01:53 AM Yes. This is like the fourth opinion. They can't leave the ovaries due to there are several problems with them. I get cyst on them that require surgery all the time and I can't keep having surgery every year for them.
We are a young couple also, my wife is only 32 yrs old and she has fib. on her uterus which has not gone away and we are now considering surgery to remove her uterus. She doesn't really want a full hysterectomy so she doesnt have to deal with taking medication, we already have 3 children and we're not having anymore, thank God we had the chance to have kids b4 this came along but her health is now more important.
Good luck to you and we hope that you have a speedy recovery.

kerry1 04-12-2005, 09:10 PM It sounds like you've gotten enough proof that you do need a full hyst. You might find that it makes you feel better than you ever have before. You always hear the horror stories but just as often there are women who say "I wish I'd done it sooner!" Best of luck.....
Nutshell 04-12-2005, 09:37 PM Thanks to everyones replies. I am starting to feel better about the surgery now.
annjohnson 04-13-2005, 09:36 AM You shouldn't let them take away your uterus if you can. Have you tried progesterone therapy for fibroids? I heard 3 months of therapy should shrink them. Hormone imbalances are fixable!

It sounds like she's tried everything, been to several doctors, and the pain is destroying her life. Normally I would agree with you and suggest more conservative measures, but this sounds like her last hope. IMHO, that is.
ktee_uk 04-14-2005, 04:16 AM Hi nutshell
I am sorry to hear of your pcos probs and i know it must have caused you a lot of misery over the years.
As previous poster said, it sounds like you have exhausted all the alternatives so if a hysterectomy is the next step for you, try and think positive in the knowledge that a lot of women in similar situations have found relief from this type of surgery. I know the docs always warn us that there are no guarantees but success does outweight failure.
Have you done any research into hrt? I understand that many women find it difficult to get the right sort first time round so please ask your docs what options you have in this regard and if you find your first options doesn't work then just ask for option 2.
Good luck

I am 32 and just had a full hyst. on the 7th of April. I had the Laproscopic assisted hyst so I would not have to have the large cut across the stomach. I have done very well with mine. I am still a little sore and still have some light brusies, but all seems well. Im just taking it easy and not doing very much at all. I do have my mother here to see to my daughter and you will need someone around for awhile. You cant even pick up a 1/2 gallon of milk without feeling it. My dr has put me on Climara hormone patches. I will start them on Thursday.
Im glad I had mine done this way instead of having the large cut. My sister had hers that way and she did not do well at all with hers and it took forever for her to heal. This is a much better way as far as Im concerned.

Nutshell 04-20-2005, 09:05 PM Well I had my surgery yesterday and I got to come home today. I have a 6-7 inch incision but I am gettinga long very well. The cut doesn't hurt but the inside is very sore. I am doing very good overall so hopefully it will stay that way. I have family that is helping with the kids. I am just taking it easy

LadyPhoenix 04-21-2005, 06:40 AM Glad you are home and doing good. I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 24 years old, I am now pushing 41. I was never on hormone replacement therapy even though they attempted to give it to me. I was on it for 2 weeks and ended up with PMS, something I never had prior to the surgery. I am grateful I decided on stopping cause now you can't get HRT hardly due to the fact of its high cancer risks.
Hug a pillow to walk around, that helps and try to stand up as straight as possible or you will be fighting a back ache on top of a tummy ache. I made that mistake oooppps.
Nutshell 04-21-2005, 01:28 PM I am walking completey straight. I am just sore. I actually walk like I have never even had this surgery. Thanks for everyones replies. I hope everyone's surgery is as smooth as mine has been.
kerry1 04-23-2005, 03:39 PM I hope you continue to feel better, Nutshell - let us know how you progress - I'm thinking about getting one myself (fibroids) and I'm curious how do you. I'm guessing you'll be glad you did it.
