what is the relation between disc herniation and tight hamstrings and achy feet. Before physical therapy for my 6mm L5 S1 I had pain in right leg and sore back. After 6 sessions of physical therapy (primarily back extensions) my back feels better but my hamstrings, calf and shin muscles are tight as hell. My feet (now both) are achy as hell and wake me up in the middle of the night. Has anyone had this kind of experience. Thank y'all.

Don't know the answer, but stretching the hamstrings to gain mobility by stretching and using the hips more for lost flexibility caused from the fused back is something I go through each time.

Today, the PT said that my hamstrings were as tight as violin bow strings and that's about right. With my massive fusion, not being able to bend the back for 4 months and being told not to stoop either, I suppose that there is some atrophy since they haven't been used/stretched for a while. Can only tell you that while I am active and work hard in things I do, but getting these hamstrings stretched is a big task!

Dear Biogeek and Quietcook,
I have learned a way to stretch my hamstrings without putting stress on my post-op back. My PT has me using a "slant board" which is a wedge on the floor against a door
molding. You put one foot flat on it (which will be as if uphill) and the other on the top edge to balance yourself. You then move your body close to the door molding thereby stretching your hamstring. Hold it for 10-20 seconds then switch feet. Do this 3 times.
It hurts when you first start this. Do it every other day. It won't hurt like the first time. Really stretches out your legs and doesn't hurt the back at all! Also, do some toe raises (standing on your toes by lifting both heels) 10 times. Repeat 3 sets of ten. This also doesn't hurt your back but does start to give you mobility again. I hope this helps.

I to have tight hamstrings and have had for years following an l4/5 & l5/s1 fusion. There is a relationship between the two and following surgery you need to make a cocerted effort to stretch your calves and hamstrings. My understanding is that the tighter your hamstrings the more stress u place on your lower baack. I see a P/T who has given me a range of ideas and means to stretch them without putting pressure on my back
