Hello all,
I get foot cramps quite regularly, meaning my muscles will tighten up and my foot will go into a very weird position I didn`t even know it could! They`re very painful and I was wondering what caused them or how I can prevent them? Is it something in my diet I`m lacking?
Thankyou

so your foot actually turns w/ the cramping and you have no control over it?

Yes right. I have no control over when it happens or how my foot will bend. Any ideas?

I get those. Had one last night - I was stretching my foot and it spasmed with the toes curled to one side - fun, fun. My GP told me that it could be a calcium/magnesium deficiency so to take tums or another supplement. If I do that its much better, just got to remember! :)

I have also been getting these foot cramps...pretty scary when you see how deformed your foot looks... very, very painful...ususally standing and walking relieves it....but this gets me up a couple times a night...I will try the calcium/magnesium...thanks....shirl

I used to get charley horses in my calves at night and was told to increase my potassium (ie, eat bananas, cantaloupe, etc.) and found that it helped.

Besides the calcium, magnesium and potasium, we will sometimes drink a gatorade. My hubby used to have horrible hand and foot cramps until the rheumotologist suggested drinking the gatorade.

I have heard that dehydration can cause cramps. I think this is probably true, for example: I recently had a few glasses of wine during the day, which as we all know, dehydrates your body. That night I woke up to my leg getting ready to cramp up. I think making sure you drink enough fluids, water or something like Gatorade, being the best things, and especially in warmer weather, could maybe help you avoid those uncomfortable cramps.

Regarding the wonderful world of foot and toe cramps (calf muscles, too) how do you handle those when you are non-weight bearing and in a hard cast..do you simply grab hold of your toes and straighten them out as you scream into the night? Yikes!!!!!!!! Trying to plan ahead for the inevitable!! thanks!!!!!

Your health food store should carry a product called Hyland's Leg Cramps (their products are named for the problem). It stopped my leg and feet cramps immediately.

Hi
I too suffer quite badly with foot and calf cramps at night. You could try getting a prescription from your GP for Quinine or maybe you can buy it direct from the Pharmacy in the States (?) and take one of these at night they work brilliant for leg and foot cramps, however they cannot be taken if you have any sort of Heart complaint but check with your GP.
Good luck :)
