Hi everyone
I haven't done a lot of posting lately
I'm gonna have to play catchup here I see...
I talked to the ss the other day, they ordered me a medical card
I can't wiat - in the meantime I had to pay almost 100.00 out of my pocket yesturday to see a dentist...couldn't wait any longer (this dentist didn't accept medical card either) then i had to get some amoxixillian for the infection.... I HOPE they reimburse me for the prescrition amount anyhow when I DO get my card*
anyway they said I had already got my back pay - it was the check I received for 389.00 .....boy am I bummed :(
I wanted SO BAD to take my backpay and perhaps build a small porch onto my house , so I could have my washer and dryer right here on this level, so I don't go falling down the steps again...I could just cry !
and my husband trying to do the laundry just isn't working....MEN !
I like my clothes and things done a certain way and he just isn't getting it...
anyhow just wanted to vent about my backpay

This confuses me. I thought if you receive a favorable decision that you are eligible to receive back pay from the day you first applied. What am I missing here? How come you only received that small amount of $389.00 total?

I'm certainly no expert, but it was always my impression that SS decided when you were eligible for back pay and I think they do not include the waiting time between the time you applied and the time they make their decision. In other words if you became disabled in Jan. and applied in June and they made their decision in Dec. you would only get back pay from Jan to June. I may be totally wrong just what I have been told, and not by any SS officials.

Most folks allege a disability onset date on or before the date of application. However, when SSA makes a favorable decision they also make a finding as to the disability onset date which can be later than the onset date alleged by the applicant. If you disagree with the onset date established by SSA (or an ALJ) you can appeal the onset date. But you must keep in mind that if you do appeal the onset date, you put the entire issue of disability back on the table. So most folks will take a later onset date rather than risk the already awarded benefits.

Hi,
The first five months after you actually become disabled is a waiting period and there is no backpay for this period at all. For example if the date that you became disabled was on June 4th of 2004- that automatically moves it up to July 1st and then those five months following are the waiting period. Say you get approved for SS Disability and receive your backpay check in February of 2005- you will only get backpay for January. The monthly check that you receive in February is actually for March as they pay one month ahead.

I got my first check in MArch...

They did the exact smae thing to me as they did you Gran. They took away the year of my horrid laughable recovery??and decided that my date would be the date that they sent me my first denial which was april1,2004.then take away the five months, and I recieved my very firt check for 1400 on dec 1,which also included the months of dec check.i too was quite bummed. But, you just deal with it, be happy for what you DID get (that ever important approval)and live with the fact that you now at least have a regular income.I was just thankful that we didn't end up losing our home.at least you recieved the real important things.Marcia
