I know that if you are in a cast, you can expect your calf muscle to shrink, but I am in a surgerical walking shoe and do use my foot and leg, yet my calf is noticably smaller! What's up with this, anyone know?

I don't know if you were NWB for any length of time, but my doctor told me that after only 1 week the muscles start atrophying. This continues even after you're able to walk a little bit with the walking boots or shoes. I had my last surgery one year ago and the muscles in my calf and thigh in my right leg are still smaller than the left even though I was able to lift weights for a while. The doc said that it will always probably be that way. I'm not sure why but it makes pants fit pretty oddly at times. lol.

You'll get it back - it's not immediate, but after a couple weeks you'll look down and see your calf like it always was - not to worry!

I hope so! I didn't expect this, but since I am nWB on the front of my foot, (in wedge shoe) I guess it makes sense that some muscles aren't being used.

I noticed the same thing with my right leg in January. The "cast man" at the doc's office told me last Tuesday my left leg muscle will continue to atrophy and my cast will get looser. My right leg is close to normal again even without exercise since I opted to have my surgeries close together.

I didn't have surgery but my muscle is gone...I'm starting to walk now with normal shoes, but need the help of one crutch. It still hurts to walk...
