My 18-year-old son has been complaining about light pain/soreness in his pelvis and thighbone for several months now. He doesn't feel the pain unless he press his hand hard against the pelvis/thigh bone, plus the pain is really minor. However, the pain doesn't come on its own. Could this be possible signs of bone cancer? Thank you for your help.

Pain is a sign that something is different and needs to be looked into further.
Not all bone pain is associated with bone cancer - there are alot of benign tumors that have pain as well.
The first sign of my disease (benign bone tumors) was pain or simply it felt like things were out of align but you could see they weren't out of joint. So not sure where the pain originated or why I was having pain. I was 23 when it started and diagnosed at 25 after I finally went to the ER. Now I have to say that my doc when I mentioned it to him said I just had an inflamed hipjoint without getting any xrays. He put me on anti-inflammatories and said I would be better soon. So - my only suggestion is that you insist on xrays upfront.
Post back and let us know what happens.

HRTOFLUV, I am very concerned about my son. If you don't mind, could you please tell me which part(s) of your body had these tumors? thanks a lot

Well my story is quite long and has changed over the years. And the last thing I want to do is scare you (being a mom myself). But if it might help....
But I can tell you that originally it felt like my knee was out of place cause it would shoot pains up my leg (or so I thought). When I went to the doc then, he felt around my knee up my leg and then grabbed my hip - I almost came off the table. So he said an inflamed hipjoint and gave me anti-inflammatories. So I went with that for a couple years - not knowing that I should have asked WHY my hip joint was inflamed. Every now and then it would seem like my shoulder would be out of place (not visable, but something didn't feel right). So I ended up in the ER one night when it wouldn't go away. The said I had a cyst on my shoulder and needed to see an ortho. When I saw him 2 wks later, he asked if I hurt anywhere else, so I told him about my hip. He took xrays then of both hips. When he put it up on the screen, even I could see a difference. Well, he said I needed to get a bone scan to see if there were other areas. Long story short - I had 11 spots show up on the scan (legs, ankles, and arms) - which he showed to me and circled on the scan, but told me there was nothing they could do and he would just re-xray me every 6 months to see if they were growing. Well, neither I nor my parents wanted to wait another 6 months, so a friend at church who was a med office manager (her husband had done the actual bone scan) called and got me in with an ortho surgeon in the next town. He sent me for a CT of my hip (cause its weight-bearing). The CT tech started the scan and then it stopped quickly with her paging the Radiologist STAT to the CT room (not like I couldn't hear anything). So he comes, looks at the first two sections of the scan, comes over and calmly asks if I know why they are doing this scan. I told him I have a tumor in my hip. So he says ok - as long as you know - I am changing the order to have it scan closer together. He stayed around and showed me the scan and where the tumor has eaten my bone from the inside out. WOW!
Now, the ortho said I had to have surgery quickly to stabilize my femur or it could shatter with a simple fall. So I went in the next week for a rod and nails. The ortho had suggested it could be FD, so the biopsy came back as possible FD, as the ortho suggested.
Well, after a few years, I checked in with a clinical trial for FD at NIH and was accepted. Over the 2.5 years that I traveled there and participating in imaging tests, infusions, surgeries; my diagnosis changed to angiomatosis of the bones.
Also prior to going to NIH - I would always feel some discomfort when I would rest my elbow with my hand up on the windowsill of the car. I have now learned that this is one area that had been missed previously - and was one of the worst. It would be uncomfortable if you pressed on certain areas, but not really hurt. I had what my dance coach called tennis elbow in college in the same arm, but never saw a doctor. So I assume it was from this tumor as well. I couldn't straighten it all the way out and it would swell every now and then. Also - I would have what I would call chilled to the bone - it would be like ice inside. I just always thought that people did this cause they would say it, but I've since learned this is only me. I hope I have limited this to just pertinent info for you and your son - the beginnings of my story. Signs and symptoms of my bone pain. Still may not be your son's problem - could be a ligament or muscle issue, but it's always best to find out.
Now the key for you and your son - first is see an ortho surg - he should order the xrays. But be persistent on imaging tests. The xrays will be first, but if it just shows some small changes - demand on the CT or the MRI (contrast). These will clearly outline any bone changes.
How is your son hurting - have him describe the pain to you first, and always go into the dr office with him. My mom went in and what I couldn't remember - she did. Also I took a notepad with me after the first few visits - so that I could write everything down and remember later. Also I would jot down any questions I had prior to the visits, so I would remember. Activity limited, work limited, what to do if I have pain, when I should call him, etc.
Please post back and let me know how your son is doing and what you've decided to do.

Thank you so much HRTOFLUV for writing that long reply,I feel a lot better now.
His bones don't really hurt on their own. Similarly, my son says other bones also ache a little if he press his hand on it hard enough. Also, he have soft lumps on his neck and under his armpit, but the doc said they are normal and shouldn't be something to worry about.

Just curious why a doc would not be concerned with soft lumps on his neck and under his armpit - that's his lymph nodes. And usually it's a sign of infection and should be investigated as to why his lymph nodes are swollen. Not trying to say worry, but I think your son might need a second opinion. Bones should NOT hurt when you press on them - mine do, but do yours? I mean if he has symptoms that you do not have, then I would say they are NOT normal.
Why don't you try posting under children's health about the swollen lumps and see what kind of response you get.
Wishing you the best!

First and foremost, hrtofluv, thank you so much for your help and support!
Today we got the results and both the blood/urine tests and the x-rays were fine! Thank You Lord! By the way hrtofluv, I took him to the EarNoseThroat specialist last August, and the doc said there is nothing to worry about(the lumps were soft and less than 1cm in diameter). However, he still complains about the pain. Should he do a MRI or something? What could this possibly be?

Glad to see that his tests were normal, but I still wouldn't accept the fact that a child has lumps that hurt and that is normal.
I would raise this with the doctor again (9 months later). This doc may have thought they would have gone away by now. Just call and ask the nurse if he might want to see him again based on the fact that they are still present and hurting. Or check into a second opinion. You just want to be 100% sure your child is healthy. A mom's instinct is usually something worthwhile to me. YOU are your child's best advocate! Never take pain as normal. This isn't growing pains - it's swollen lymph nodes or something else that needs to be investigated further.
Let me know what happens.

Thanks again, hrtofluv! You are always there for me and my son. Actually, my son's swollen lymph nodes don't really cause pain. They are inactive and are pretty soft. When I was his age, I also had similar lymph node problems but they went away as I got older. Anyway, when he finishes school this year, I will take him to other docs and see what they have to say.
