View Full Version : Sodium Laurel Sulphate & hair loss

I have recently been concerned that this detergent in nearly all shampoos can cause hair loss, itchy scalp and hair to become dry and brittle.

This detergent is used to clean factory floors - no wonder it causes so many hair problems.

There is a milder form called Sodium Laureth Sulphate, which again is in most shampoos, but it's still not good.

You can buy SLS free shampoos from health food shops, but they are always incredibly expensive.

I've been suffering from hair loss and dry hair for seven years now, and I have ruled out all the usual vitamin / iron deficiencies etc.

I would be interested to hear other people's views on this.

Selsun Blue doesn't contain Sodium Laurel Sulphate, but does contain Ammonium lauryl sulphate. Is there a difference?

Yeah, they are both harmful to sensitive individuals.
I'll recommend a SLS free shampoo once I find one.

About two years ago i posted on these boards about this very same topic. I was moulting more hair than i thought was normal, even on days i had not washed it. I found some shampoo's which specifically didn't contain any of the sulphates. The sulphates are just a chemical which cause the soapy suds in anything from shampoo to dishwashing liquid.

Anyway, the one i found is by a company called Avalon Organics. I did a search for them on the net and you can find info on these products. I think it's an American company so most of you should be able to find these products in your local chemist or healthfood stores (i'm in Australia). I began using it regularly and i did notice a big difference. It all depends why you are shedding too much hair. It could be anything from genetic to poor diet, stress, prescription medication.

I've bumped up a post on hair loss which i had posted a while back and it mentions quite a lot of intersting stuff.
