View Full Version : athetoid CP - how can i help?

my plea for help seems different than everyone elses here. i work with a 6 year old girl in school. we've been together for almost four years. she has athetoid CP, cannot walk unassisted (uses a gait trainer/walker with every prompt) and cannot speak - yet. she uses a dynavox (she is not yet independant). she is a brilliant child, but trapped. is there anyone out there who was like this as a child? i'm looking for something that maybe was a monumental break through for you, that i can give her. she is happy, but i always feel like maybe i am missing something. i don't want to hold her back. she is fairly independant during her free time in school, (a regular public school), goes on errands with friends (without me). i have to help her with her academics. she has trouble with math (basic counting) i am guessing b/c she cannot use the manipulatives. how can i help her? any words of wisdom???
