I have another question. Before diagnosed with Gerd I had all kinds of symptoms that confused and scared me. Various stomach and chest pains, big heartburn, sore throat, neck pain, swallowing pain, ear pain just to name a few. My GI found inflammation in my stomach and esophagus with an endoscope.

I have started Priolsec ( 1month) and things are much better. Heartburn, chest and stomach pain are gone and I am so grateful!!! But the sore throat, neck, ear and swallowing pain still remain.

Can these still be related to the GERD or the damage it may have caused above the esophagus?? My regular doctor put me on antibiotics for the ear pain but it didn't help. I don't know if I have something else scary going on or just need to give the Prilosec more time?? Any thoughts???

I've been around the horn with this one to. It took over 8 months for the heartburn to subside and this was 24/7. I've been good for 3 weeks now but still get throat pain along with swallowing and ear pain. I looked up prilosec and other PPI's and they pretty much all list throat and ear pain as a possible side effect. I stopped the prilosec 2 days ago and the throat and ear pain are gone. I did it as an experiment twice now and it is the same reaction. I think you will find once you are through with the prilosec treatment those other symptoms will dissipate as well. I decided that Ican put up with those untill the burn is gone, I hope it never lasts as long as this one did. Lousy way to lose 10 lbs that you couldn't afford to lose and it sure changed my eating habits as well.

Did you have the sore throat, neck and ear pain before prilosec? If so, you might have LPR. If that is the case, (I also have this), it can take 6 months to get rid of those signs. LPR takes much longer to heal than traditional heartburn signs. Many people find it helpful to up the dose to 2x/day with the ppi. It is usually helpful however if you get side effects from the meds they will probably increase. Check with your dr. first. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

NancyH, that is interesting. I have not seen those side effects for Prilosec. I have seen them for Nexium though. Where did you read this??

I guess it wouldn't hurt too much to stop the Prilosec for a couple of days just to see what happens?? Maybe I'll call my gastro dr AGAN!!!

Just remember these are the uncommon but they do exist, upper respiratory includes ears nose and throat, muscle cramps and pain can be in any part of the body. Nexium and Prilosec formula are virtually the same, they just tossed it around differently gave it a new name, and a higher price cuz people were screaming for OTC equivalent PPI for Prilosec or so the pharmacists say, and I tend to believe them over the Drug com or Dr. If you notice upper resp and throat pain are at the bottom of the list.
Less common or rare side effects may include:
Abdominal swelling, abnormal dreams, aggression, anemia, anxiety, apathy, back pain, breast development in males, blood in urine, changes in liver function, chest pain, confusion, constipation, cough, depression, difficulty sleeping, discolored feces, dizziness, dry mouth, dry skin, fatigue, fever, fluid retention and swelling, fluttery heartbeat, frequent urination, gas, general feeling of illness, hair loss, hallucinations, hepatitis, high blood pressure, hives, irritable colon, itching, joint and leg pain, loss of appetite, low blood sugar, muscle cramps and pain, nervousness, nosebleeds, pain, pain in testicles, rapid heartbeat, rash, ringing in ears, skin inflammation, sleepiness, slow heartbeat, stomach tumors, taste distortion, tingling or pins and needles, throat pain, tremors, upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infection, vertigo, weakness, weight gain, yellow eyes and skin

Eveything I read on Nexium also says Lymph Node Problems!!! What kind of problems?? I have had some swollen Lymph Nodes in my neck and chin since starting Prilosec and the antibiotics my DR gave me haven't changed them at all!!! I am getting nervous. I think I will stop the Prilosec for a few days and see what happens!!!
