My son is 4 , he will be 5 in July. He has always been a healthy & VERY active, some may even say Hyperactive.. I say hes Happy http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif! But here in the last month my husband and I have noticed something very disturbing. He just got over the chicken pox 2 weeks ago, and we thought this might be his way of tuning us out (ignoring us) at first but quickly realized that he wasn't. This is what happens...He can be playing, talking or doing any normal 4 yr. activity and his eyes will turn to the sky..he rubs or scratches his head, slowly rocks back and forth or walks staggering and seems to be lost and not hear or really "see" you for a matter of 30 to 60 seconds..after this episode he returns to his coloring, playing, laughing,
smiling,etc...so what happened during the time he was in that "zone"??? I am worried to death. At first I thought it had something to do with his chicken pox, but then I remembered a few times in the past he has done something like that but wrote it off as something else..Everyday it seems to be gradually increasing in episodes..If I'm not in the room with him I still know when hes having one because his 7 year old sister will say his name over and over trying to get him to snap out of it..Please if you have any info on behavior such as this or what it might be..please please... mail me or respond to this posting. I have an appt. set for him with his Ped. but need some answers or advice now!! Thanks~ http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif A worried Mom

I took my son to the ER because he had 8 of these episodes at home and then 3 at the hospital. They confirmed that it was indeed seizures, called PetitMal..also known as "absence
Seizure type most common in children. Shows itself by momentary unconsciousness, possibly with twitching of the face, upward eye rolling and loss of grasp." ~GLOSSARY meaning~

...They did a CT and bloodwork and said that it all looked normal but he needs an EEG so I have scheduled him one. The doctors say these type of seizures are very common in children and that most kids grow out of them without ever having meds. but then some need meds. to control them so they don't lead to Epilepsy... Well just thought this might help someone else who may have a child with the same type of seizures..I Just hope & Pray his EEG comes back normal!! He was a good boy during the bloodwork and Ct.....I couldn't help but laugh my head off at him because when we got back to the room to wait on the results he shouted in a playing manner "Hey!! whoevers got the picture of my brain needs to bring it to me" and then he had this silly grin and laughed really loud.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Please keep us in your prayers!!

Sounds like you have everything undercontrol. I live in Australia and work in a Major Children's Hospital as a Registered Nurse. It is quite possible that they are absent seizures. They certainly don't appear to be grand mal. The problem sometimes is that when a child is having a CT scan or EEG it is better (it sounds terrible but) when they are having a seizure at the same time. SOmetimes CT and EEG are quite normal between seizures and the best thing is for the child to have a seizure during the tests. During a EEG they often use a strobe light to encourage the child to have a seizure but often stimulus does it just as well! Good luck!
