View Full Version : post op bunion questions

I had a bunion surgery just over 2 months ago and overall am pretty happy with it.
I am not sure of the exact name of procedure but it is the one where the surgeon realigns the bone plus leaves a pin implanted in the foot(not the removeable kind). Prior to surgery I had an extremely crooked big toe and the one next was all bent too. Now all looks fairly ok.
I am now walking around fairly well in sneaker type shoes and naturally the toes are not fully flexible and there is still swelling BUT also I find that it hurts on the outside of my ankle where it is also swollen later in day more than first thing. I try to walk correctly going "thru the toes" as much as possible but the foot does feel v. uncomfortable on the outside edge and weak in the ankle. I am assuming it is due to the realignment and now I am sort of using the muscles differently but I wondered if anyone has any input on this. Should I go to a "foot physical therapy person" perhaps?? I go to my foot doc next week but I am pretty sure he will not suggest anything going by his track record so far. Thanks to anyone that can reply to my message. :)

Hi, I am only four weeks post op, however, once I am on my feet a bit I too get swelling by the ankle as well (under the bone and a little towards the front). I'll be interested in what others have to say and your doctor as well!!

Yes Yes Yes, Joll43 and I both had ankle aches. Totally from walking differently and overcompensating etc etc etc. My ankle was so super swollen from about post op week 6 when I first was weight bearing to about post op week 12. I couldn't beleive how long it took! I started PT at week six and went for 5 weeks. I had to do lots and lots of strengthening exercises for ankle as well as foot. I am a huge pusher for PT after bunionectomy!!!! Check into it. My insurance covered mine.

Thanks for all this info. Yes I think I will definitely ask my doc about PT when I see him week after next and meanwhile I will try to follow some of the tips I read on here. At least now I do not feel I am so abnormal!!!
