I didn't see a hernia forum so I'll post here.
Here's my question: For those of you that have had hernias and had them surgically repaired, how long afterwards till there was no more pain?
My situation is this... I was diagnosed with a hernia last year. It is located in my pelvic region on the right side on my body almost in the cease between my pelvis and my right thigh. It used to burn and feel tender before I was operated on. It only flaired up 3 times since when it happened. I got operated on it on Jan. 21st of this year. The doctor told me it was a pretty bad tear. He inserted a surgical "mesh" into the repair to strengthen it, that is pretty much standard these days. After the first two months I was feeling pretty good. I took it easy like I was supposed to. Now it's been three months and haven't seen the surgeon in at least a month. A couple nights ago I was awaken at night by a bit of a pain down there. It felt like a sharp pinching pain. I was laying on my right side (the side of the hernia) and just rolled over and went back to sleep. Now for the last couple of days the sporadic "sharp pinching" pain comes back, especially when I am sitting. It's not real bad but I don't remember that area being tender for the last few weeks until that night I was awaken.
Is this normal? I'm about to go back to him and see what's up. I can't see that I could have re-torn it because I haven't done anything strenuous in the last couple weeks.
Any comments and opinions welcome...

Hi there,
I spoke to my husband about this as he had a hernia operation a couple of years ago. He said that this is perfectly normal and he experiences a few twinges/slight pain even now. He was told by the surgeon that this would happen. I remember he went back to his gp a couple of months after surgery because he thought like you that it had re-torn but everything was fine. I hope this eases your mind a little, i am sure everything is fine for you. I know that the proceedure is not pleasant and no one wants to have to go through it twice!!

Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better. My surgeon did say that I would still experience some pain as far out as six months. I was just surprised at this "flare up".

I had one repaired with mesh also (five years ago) and I still experience this same feeling from time to time. It's the mesh.

I know that this post is old, but my husband just had a hernia operation in the same area as yours. (pelvic region). He had it on 10/19/06. He now has a large hard lump about 4 inches wide and 2 inches long. The doctor said that it should go away in 2 months. The lump is larger than the hernia and is continually pertruding. He had the mesh inserted too. I am just wondering if anyone had a large lump too, or is the doctor just blowing him off because he messed up. Please advise. Thank you!
