I had surgery oh the 7 th of April, part of mycolon and rectom was removed, my surgery lasted for 5 hours and I had difficult time overcoming the pain after surgery. I have temporary ileostomy bag, and my surgeon was satisfied with the results of the surgery saying that everything going the normal way.I was released from the hospital on the 7th day, now after three weeks after surgery I am still experiencing great amount of pain, I take strong medication(tylenol#4) and antibiotics, but my pain does not go away, preventing me from resuming my every day activities, I cannot sleep, my appetite is gone...But my doctor keeps telling me that this is the usual process of recovery and I should start feeling better soon. But I do not feel any im provment since the day I was released from the hospital. My question is if anybody who had similar surgey (resection of the colon and rectom) can advice me what is the best way to cope with pain and how long did it last in your case?

saarust:
Stronger pain meds. I am a Stage 3C Rectal Cancer Survivor. They really mess around with those nerves down there... sever them in some instances. It is VERY painful. I have been through it, I know. My surgeon ended up upping my pain meds a little, but the main one to give me the heavy stuff is my oncologist... I'm almost 1 1/2 years post initial resection and still have a lot of pain in my rectum that flares to the buttocks, hamstrings, and especially hips and lower back.
I wish you luck in becomming a little less pained soon. You may want to check out the chronic pain board, and consider seeing a pain management specialist.

One thing to remember is that it certainly will take a lot of time to completely heal. My scars were not healed for 8 weeks after surgery and the internal scars were still there for a year(I could feel some of them around my colostomy.
Your situation is very similar, I think, to Cancerdads his advice should aid you greatly.
