This is Katie's mom. I just have a question related to insurance. Does anyone know if medical insurance covers an inpatient stay at the hosptial to detox off drugs? It is Saturday so I can't call our insurace rep. I wonder if insurance will cover her to go to inpatient treatment after she is done with the hospital detox. Insurance companies can be pretty strict with what they pay for and what they don't. Maybe I should go talk to someone at the doctors office or the hospital and find out how they go about it. I know there are different codes for each medical diagnosis. I guess it all depends on what the doctor writes down for her medical diagnosis.

We will get her the help she needs regardless but with all her surgeries our medical bills are already sky high. Plus, I had a surgery 3 years ago that left my left arm useless. I am a RN but haven't worked for 3 years and am on social security disability.

That leads me to another story. I went to have a bone spur taken off my clavicle by an ortho doctor. Instead of just shaving the bone spur off he shaved my rotator cuff into shreds and didn't reattach my deltoid. I have a medical malpractice lawsuit against him. We are going into mediation on May 17th. It has been 3 long years and I will be glad it is over. Being a nurse, it has been hard to file a lawsuit against a doctor although he has over 20 lawsuits against him at this time.

I have been on many pain meds for my shoulder. I have gone to specialist after specialist and all they ever tell me is that I will be on pain meds for the rest of my life. I strictly use them for pain and don't get the high that some people do. They help with my pain so I can have a somewhat productive life. What makes me feel so bad is I am the one that took Katie to my pain management doctor for her headaches. He gives me my nerve blocks in my shoulder to help with the pain. The day I took Katie to him he gave her a couple of injections in her forehead to help with the pain and gave her a script for oxycodone. She was only to take them when she had a severe headache. I didn't realize she was still going to him and getting all that oxycodone. I should have realized that she was getting addicted to them. I am a nurse also so I should have known. I can't believe that I didn't. I could kick myself in the head for not realizing what was going on.

I am pretty sure that she thought we'll mom has to take pain meds and they help her so there is nothing wrong if I take them. How stupid I have been. I am on a duragesic patch and take oxycodone for breakthrough pain. Since this happened to Katie I am not taking the oxycodone anymore. I won't have it around this house for Katie to be tempted by it. If she has to learn to manage her headaches then I will learn to handle mine. I can't give up the duragesic patch because my pain is just to severe but I can quit the oxycodone.

Katie and I have talked at length about how some people need and have to take pain meds with chronic pain. She knows how severe of an injury I have and has seen me suffer for days. My shoulder is very unstable and dislocates quite often. Before I started on the patch I would be up all night long in pain. It was hard on my whole family. At least with the patch I can sleep at night and get up in the morning and get things done. I wear a sling or a brace 24/7.

You can see why I feel so responsible for Katie getting hooked on oxycodne. I know it was my fault and I will never forgive myself for that. All I can do now is get her all the help she needs and be here for her while she gets off them. I can only let her know how much I love her and how proud I am of her for telling us what was going on. She is being so strong. I know how hard it is for her to finish up her last weeks of college and know that in a week she will be in the hospital fighting to get off the oxycodone.

Thanks for all the support you have given us on this board. Katie and I both feel so much better when we read of all the support and love you all show.

Not sure but if I were you I'd call them and ask to see if they cover detox stayovers.
Katie has great support in you the way I see it, with your help she will be ok.
Being an addict as I am I know how important family is getting through the pain, I have a great family also which is such a big help.
Your baby girl will be ok (big smile)
Make sure you stay strong for her because she needs you more now than ever

Katies Mom,
I work in a hostpital (billing dept in the credit and legal area) that has a detox unit. What kind of insureance do you have? I may be facing going to a rehab pretty soon. Although I wont need detox, (I'm 14 days clean today) they would cover it if I needed it.

There should be a phone number on the back of your insurance card for "mental health coverage -- or something like that. That phone number has to be "manned" all the time as people dont wait till M-F to seek medical attention. They will be able to tell you what your daughter would be covered for.

Marilyn
P.S. Dont feel bad about "introducing" Katie to px meds. If she has/had an addictive personality, she would have "found" something else perhaps. Who knows..........
In my prayers....................

P.P.S. Theres really ony a few ICD9 codes that a dr can write for tetoxing a pt (patient). The first Dx (diagnosis) code he would us is for detox, the second Dx code would narrow it down to what she is detoxing from.
