I recently had some outbreak of sores on my penis the doctor said it was herpes & gave me a 7 day supply of valtrex.he sent of a sample for a herpes test but the test came back negative..i went to another doctor for a 2nd opinion & he said it looks like herpes too..i'm going to the clinic tomorrow..why dont these doctors know what i have & why did the test come back negative???

Maybe it is HPV instead, I really don't know. Or maybe you want to get checked again just to be safe because the test could have been wrong.

I agree with what Bunnyb said. The test might have been wrong or it might be somoething that looks like herpes.
By the way, does anybody know off hand how common genital herpes is? I've never encounter a sexual partner who seemed to have it (at least so I hope...lol). And - when you do an all-around STD test, is herpes included? In that case I can know for sure I don't have it...

No, almost never. In general, to test for herpes, you need to have a swab taken from an active sore. So unless you go to the doc with a sore, you will not be able to be tested.
According to the CDC, one in 5 Americans has herpes. In general, I do trust the CDC, but this number seems high to me.
