Hi I was just wondering if anyone has went through a pregnancy being on either Tegretol or frisium and how much was taken? and does it have a high risk to the baby? Thank you!

I don't take those, but I take some other meds. Anytime you have to take meds like that, or have a serious condition, they classify you as "high risk" that doesnt'nessecarrily mean that you are. I went to see a maternal fetal medicine dr ( a high risk dr.) and he told us that although many drugs are classified that way, only a few are really that dangerous, and that even though I was classified as high risk, he didnt' even see it that way, which made me feel much better! Really, having a seizure during pregnancy is alot more dangerous than taking the meds. Most likely they will just put you on high doses of folic acid, and monitor you a alittle more closely. For instance, whereas most women only have one or two ultraounds, I have had to go have two done at the specialists, and have had to have them every three weeks for growth for three months now, and will continue until the end (7 weeks from now!)
Good luck!

thanks Cattieos! I appreciate all the help you have given me with your advice! I come from a small town and we don't have a very big hospital here but we do about 1 hour away. I guess if I go see my Neuro he might consider me as high risk. Do they say high risk because you are on 2 different meds? keep in touch!

I was on Tegretol and Keppra through my whole pregnancy. While I suffered some seizures during, the real whoppers came post partum. I believe the month after having him I had 114, mostly gran mal. The baby was fine.
Good luck to you.

Hi Mindy

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and take Tegretol. My E nurse told me that it's one of the safer drugs to take during pregnancy. Although my dose is relatively small (600mg a day) I always felt a bit nervous taking but as Cattieos said the benefits outweigh the risks. My OB is scanning me every 4 weeks to watch the growth of my baby and she's doing just fine.

Take care.

Hi Nicole,
I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. We are wanting to tr to conceive over the next few months and I have epilepsy. I have been on tegretol since I was 11, I am now 28 and have done wonderfully on it. Recently they tried to take me off of it, and my EEG came back with not so good results so they put me back on. Now they have me trying Lamictal, and I dont think my body is really agreeing with it at all. I dont feel comfortable about continuing it, so I'm just going to stay with the tegretol. I am on 400mg a day, what is the advice/info your Dr's have given you? As far as percentages of risks and what not. I just want to be sure it is somewhate safe to get pregnant on tegretol......
any info/advice would help..

Erin
