My 11 month old son just got a really bad cold, he's nose is red and is always running, I dont know what to do to help him - any advise. I have the humidifier on at all times but I wish I could make his cold go away for him! Thanks!

About all I can suggest is:

1- give him plenty of clear fluids [home-made chicken soup/broth and pureed meat and vegetables would be good too, as well as fruit juices if partially diluted with water, and some lightly sweetened, slightly warmed cammomile tea],
2- massage his back and chest to soothe him,
3- keep his head slightly upright/elevated for as much of the day as possible to help drain his sinuses and keep his breathing passages clear,
4- use Vicks Vaporub to help him clear his nose and lungs,
5- occasional infant's Tylenol if he's running a temperature [talk your doc/pharmacist first if your son hasn't had Tylenol before],
6- use soft tissue to wipe his nose/face [the new 'contains lotion' tissues are really much more comfortable],
7- apply some vaseline around his [clean] nose and chin to reduce irritation and to make it easier to clean/wipe off any congealed/thickened mucous, and
8- if he gets very stuffed up you may need to use a nasal syringe to unclog his nose [you can buy a nasal syringe at most pharmacies, ask the pharmacist/your doctor about correct use].

Colds in infants tend to last about as long as colds in adults. If he doesn't start to feel better in about 4 days, take him to your doctor. Most colds last about 7 days and the 5th day is usually when the cold starts to turn around [feel milder]. If he starts coughing, call your doctor.

another tip that i got from my daughter's dr.-if the mucus is real thick and and baby is very stopped up you can buy "little noses"at walmarts-it's a saline solution and it is truly wonderful-you put it in their nose and almost instantly everything comes out-i always used the syringe afterwards-you can also mix this at home but i can't remember the salt to water amount to use-hope baby feels better
