My SIL is in her early 30's and was diagnosed yesterday (we are still waiting to hear what type according to my brother). She is 31 weeks pregnant with my niece.
Has anyone on this board had experience with treating Leukemia while pregnant? The doctors plan to begin chemo today or tomorrow. She has been told that it is safer to have chemo while in her 3rd trimester than to deliver the baby this early. Still, its doubly scary with two lives in the balance.
Do survival rates vary from person to person, or are there general "averages" based on type? I haven't wanted to ask outright and they haven't offered if the doctors have even said. I don't know if I am more scared for my SIL's survival or the baby's health. My hands haven't stopped shaking all morning, yet I'm sure its only a minute reaction compared to how they must be feeling right now.
Which leads me to my final question. My brother and SIL are very quiet, private people and I am very unsure as to how best to be supportive. I am outgoing and would want people around me constantly, but I get the feeling they do not. Do I call daily? Will that be annoying - should I let them call me? Do I offer websites that I've found with information on the subject, or wait until they ask? Has there been something that someone has said to you or done for you that was very helpful/supportive/comforting?
Any guidence would be greatly appreciated.
Blessings,
Monica
