OK-today I gave my son a PB&J sandwich-he's 15 months old, but after he ate it, I then wondered if I should be allowing him to have peanut butter yet or not. I can't remember what everything has said about peanuts, and now I'm nervous. He's ok, nothing bad happened to him...still a normal, gregarious little boy, but I don't want to harm him. Can he have peanut butter now, or should I hold off?

Peanut butter is fine. There is no age limit for peanut butter. So long as he can handle a sandwhich or crackers with it go ahead and give it too him.

Peanut Butter is not fine. I also gave my 1 year old a peanut butter sandwich last week, I think on the 25th, too. She had a bad reaction. She turned beat red and was covered in welts. She has an appointment with the allergist tomorrow to determine if she is allergic to it or the bread. Since she broke out, I have been reading everything I can on the internet about peanut butter allergy. I've learned the following 1.Peanut butter allergy is caused by over exposure to peanut at too young of an age. Why didn't we have problems when we were kids? It is in everything now, unlike years ago. 2.Children should not have any PB until they are 3 years old (That's also in "What to Expect the Toddler Years"). 3.Kids can develop an allergy to PB any time until they are 5 years old, especially if they have had a lot of it. So, somone who's child has no problem with it today, could have a reaction tomorrow. 4.Once a child's body determines that PB is an allergin, each reaction builds their antigen to it, making each subsequent reation worse. PLEASE don't give her any more PB, no matter what someone says. Do an internet search of peanut allergy. It's very scary. You don't want to walk this road. We are looking at facing a potential life threatening allergy, and everything I've read says it's because I ate a lot of PB while pregnant and nursing and then have been feeding her little bits. The PB sandwich may have been enough to convince her body to fight it.

My family goes through a phenominal amount of peanut butter. I need to buy stock in Skippy! I wouldn't worry about feeding your child peanut butter. He's old enough that he probably won't have any problems. Of course you can develop an allery any time in your life! I would make sure and learn the symptoms of allergic reactions so you know what to watch out for. Things like rashes, hives, wheezing, diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, reddened skin, or even irritability. Some allergic reactions are just uncomfortable, but some are definately life threatening. Also look at your family histories. Are there any close family members who have had problems with food allergies? A little education can calm a lot of fears people have about food allergies.

Choking can also be a hazard if you spread it on too thick.
