I will soon have a meeting at my sons school...we received the report from his evaluation that began some time ago. He was diagnosed with Autism. I was just wondering what to expect from this meeting...Has anyone been through this before? My son is already on an IEP and the school has been waiting for this report. I just want to be ready and have a heads up. Thanks for any input you may have. : )

I might be able to help as I'm a public school teacher.

How old is your son? What is his current IEP for?

If the meeting has been called to look at the information from his recent evaluation, it is likely that the info from the eval will be discussed along with placement issues (specifically asking if your son's placement is the right one for him given the new information).

The team (which includes you) is required to look at several different placement options before making a decision.

If you want to be prepared for the meeting, you may want to review the eval (if you have access to it). You'll also want to be sure that you have some idea in mind about what you feel is the appropriate placement for your son.

Thank you...to answer your questions: My son is 7 years old, he is currently in Kindergarten and going on to 1st grade next school year. His current IEP is for academics. He receives about 30-40 minutes a day of help from resource teacher. In his evaluation it states that he should receive some sort of summer help...is this a big deal for the school to set up, or is it painless for them.
Thanks for any help.

After reading some of the advice here awhile back about IEP's, I found a child advocate to help us. She is from a local agency and she has been able to give us an idea of what to ask for and expect. After we asked her to help us, our service at the school district improved greatly. We have had alot of luck with our school district, hopefully you will also!

I found alot of good info here also:

Good luck! Jana
