PAISLEY 10-04-2002, 01:53 PM Hi http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wave.gif At what age can a child start taking vitamins and what kind would you recommend? mlgable 10-05-2002, 01:54 AM When your child can chew food well and knows enough to chew the vitamin and not try to swallow it whole it is safe to start him on chewable vitamins. mlgable 10-05-2002, 01:56 AM Something I forgot is make sure you keep them out of reach so he doesn't accidently get a hold of them thinking they are candy etc. Always supervise when giving any kind of medication even vitamins. As for what kind.............that decision is probably one your doctor will help you with since his doc knows his history and can advise you as to what specific vitamins and minerals you child could use. SueA 10-06-2002, 06:29 AM There are multi vitamin supplements available for young children usually in liquid form. I have been giving my five year old many vitamin supplements (to help a condition he has). I usually crush the tablets and give it to him on a spoon with a drink, or I will mix them with some water and get him to drink it. Liquid iron supplements can affect the teeth. Either stain them or add toward tooth decay. I use a freezed dried liver supplement instead of the iron for my five year old. Sue PAISLEY 10-07-2002, 01:39 PM Thanks guys! My daugther is 3 and I just want to start supplementing her diet with vitamins to make sure she is getting all that she needs. She's a very picky eater but she eats well. I know back in my young days we had Flinstones. So, you think I should ask her doc about what kind I should give her? mlgable 10-08-2002, 01:28 AM You child was most likely on liquid vitamins as a baby so when those were no longer recommended your doc should have suggested what vitamins he felt would be best for your child once she outgrew the liquid ones. Any good chewable vitamin will help but it wouldn't hurt to call the docs office to get his recommendation since he knows your childs medical history etc. kalleycat 10-15-2002, 02:35 PM I use a liquid form for my 3 year old because he will not take medicine. It's called Poly Vi Sol. You can buy it just about anywhere. I mix it in with his milk. |
