Hi Sad, sorry things got so bad for you. Think of this as self improvement. Do not beat yourself up anymore. The past is just that, the past. All you have to look forward to is the future and hopefully dentures will be a big improvement for you.

It is very scary to think that all of your teeth will soon be gone. Are you close enough to mom to talk to her about her denture experience? One of the best ways to learn about dentures is from someone who wears them. Do not worry about the age thing, I was 35 when I got mine and I have been going strong with them for almost 5 years.

The extractions will cause some discomfort but if you take the prescribed medication and follow the dentists instructions they will not be too bad. Sometimes they suggest you not get immediate dentures (ones put in as soon as the teeth are removed) but wait for some healing to happen. Sometimes they suggest waiting several weeks, even months for healing to take place. Much of this depends on the overall health of your mouth and gums- do you have any infections currently? And much depends on your financial position- immediate dentures tend to cost more and require many more trips to the dentist to secure a good fit. If you wait then you can usually get a pretty good fit right away.

Post your questions and people will try to answer them as quickly as possible. How long has your mother had dentures and at what age did she get them? Is she satisfied with them?

I worked as a dental assistant for a few years and helped prepare a lot of people for dentures. Although nobody wants to go through it, I can tell you it's not going to be as bad as you think it will. And if it helps, I never saw anyone in pain, or screaming, or jumping out of the chair. Are they knocking you out, or giving you nitrous? That would be best but even still, all the extractions I assisted with were done with only local anesthetic. You'll hear some cracking and popping if you're awake, and I'm sure you're doc will give you something for the soreness after. Good luck, you'll be fine.

Hey Sad Gurl! You seem really strong to me. And trying to improve your life. I just wanted to say that when all this is over & you look in the mirror. You're gonna have one awesome smile. Think of that! That'll be awsome won't it? If you can stay clean, than I think this will be easy. An adjustment for sure, but WOW! I think you'll feel like a whole new person when it's all over & done with. And the bonus? No more dentists!!! Let us know how you you're doing OK? God Bless You.
