okay i know one mile walked is about 100 cals. burned...but does it matter what kind of walk it is? Like does it have to be a really hard tough walk or can it be more slower as long as its a mile?

not really. Some people will burn more calories than others. If you jog/run you'll burn more calories in less the time and you'll continue to burn calories throughout the day.

I have a question that is similar... do you build muscle with jogging/walking alternatively? I am trying to build calve and theigh muscle... so is that effective?

you'll either see definition because of the fat your burning off, or they'll look skinny and scrawny depending on your genetics.If you want mass/tone you need to weight train.
