At my wisdom teeth consultation a few days ago, I discovered that all four of my teeth would have to be surgically(sp?) removed. The doctor then told me all about the after effects of the surgery. Most of the things he was describing were things I had known about (things like swelling, bleeding, etc.) but he also mentioned something about a nerve located underneath one(or possibly both?) of my lower wisdom teeth. He said that during the surgeory there was a 3% possibility of this nerve being cut or severed and as a result I could lose all feeling in my lower lip and tounge, possibly forever. I had never heard of this before, and neither had any of my friends who had already had their wisdom teeth removed. Is this something I should be hearing from a competent oral surgeon? And just how remote are the chances of something like this happening? Any info from anyone would be greatly appreciated as this whole thing has me freakin out. Thanks!

Yes. It's a pretty standard disclaimer that the surgeon should tell patients beforehand. You might even have to sign something acknowledging you understand the risks, which are small- but not zero (like anything else in life).

dont worry...same thing with me...everything was fine though. not half as bad as they make out! you can have sedation, wont remember a thing, and i laughed all the way through it (its like laughing gas). i had a few stitches and my jaw bone drilled away a bit, and one was on a nerve. i was terrifyied of dentists and now im not. its a breeze dont worry !

the reason I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed is because they're coming in and moving some of my other back teeth around. But after talking with an aunt of mine who works as an orthodontic assistant, I am begining to wonder. I'm not feeling any pain, but I can feel my teeth moving, so could this be wisdom teeth related, or something I could just go to an orthodontist to fix with a retainer? How exactly does an emerging wisdom tooth effect the nearby teeth?
